Luxating patella

does anyone else have a dog suffering from this? My chi last night suddenly started limping and was still limping today. So I took her to the vet (they've told me before she's had the luxating patella) and the vet said it's between a grade 3 and a grade 4 my poor gal. The vet said she needs to rest and take anti inflamatories, and that they won't do surgery if she's not constantly limping. Please send some get well vibes for my Peep! Thanks! Also, if you could share some insight into ways that you care for your dog if they have this, can you please share? Thanks

My Toy poodle has a luxating platella. we really don't do anything different to care for him. I was walking hi one day aboud years ago and as he was going #2 he started crying. I knew immediately what it as. I took him to the vet that weekend and sure enough it was a luxating platella. The vet put him on rymadil (sp?) and we had to keep him less active for like 2 weeks, no surgery. He has not had a problem with it since then. He walks, runs, plays and he's been fine. Some times he stretches his back leg if it starts to bother him an then he is fine. that your little girl feels better soon!

you just made me feel so much better i felt like surgery was the only option, the thing is-it's never bothered her like this before, so i'm hoping that this is temporary. They gave her an injection and also Rimadyl, so I hope and that this works! Thank you for your reply

My vet told me if Bruno doesn't react if I go to touch it, I can try to put it back in place by myself.
Sometimes it gets stuck so he swings his leg around like a pirate. Other times his leg is kind of stuck in the up position.
He doesn't seem to be in pain, just annoyed when the knee is stuck.
We lift him on the furniture more now so he doesn't have to jump as much but when he's feeling fine he insists on jumping and running everywhere.
Bruno has had MANY surgeries in his short 9 years of life so we won't do this one until he's in pain from it.
I hope it goes back into place quickly and easily .

I would check out three things - two good, one bad. First the good - glucosamine and chondroitin. They're typically for joint health and I don't know if it would help in this situation but it's worth looking into.

The bad thin to google/look into are the affects of Rimadyl on dogs. It's a pain reliever that gets prescribed after surgeries usually and I've read some disturbing things about reactions and affects on other organs.

I don't want to alarm you, I just thought the info might help. I hope he shows improvement soon!

Thank you for your reply.I checked into the Rimadly (sp?) and I really don't want to keep her on it...the limp isn't going away but I really don't want to put her through surgery if it's not really bothering her. Idk what to do for my gal. I just wish it would get better Thanks everyone for your replies.
