MAC Owners.. Questions...
DH really wants a MAC and I have decided to buy him one for our 1 year anniversary.... I am completely lost with the website... and uncertain as to what we need.....
We will use it at home to surf, keep photos, keep bill spreadsheets and for documents as necessary.
My questions are...
Is the base MAC notebook sufficient for this? Should I purchase the Office package or is the MAC version sufficient?
TIA for all assistance... Im oblivious with the MACs...

Re: MAC Owners.. Questions...
We recently bought a MAC and I found the salespeople at the MAC store to be very helpful. We were clueless too and they helped us decide what we needed and what we didn't need. They didn't oversell either.
We bought an iMac, not a notebook so I can't help you there.

That's a great gift, he is going to love it!! I agree with the above poster, the people who work in the MAC store are extremely helpful. The combo drive is fine for what you need it for, but I think the superdrive is only $100 or $200 more.
I have the ibook (now i think they call it the macbook):
DH has the iMac:

Oh also, are you a teacher or student? I think you get $100 off if you show proof that you are.

Re: MAC Owners.. Questions...
I have both the G4 desktop & the powerbook. I actually prefer the powerbook. I think with a Mac, unless you are using a lot of peripherals or very large graphics programs, the notebook is more than sufficient.
Trust the geniuses at the store, they are very into what they do.
Great gift!

Re: MAC Owners.. Questions...
I would get the macbook and upgrade on the Mhz to increase speed. As for software-- purchase the Student and Teacher Microsoft Office edition-- it's like 200 bucks cheaper than the other version, and it's the same thing.
The computer should come with iLife-- which allows you do to all the other stuff you mentioned.

Re: MAC Owners.. Questions...
Thank you to everyone for all of your help!!! I was not able to get to the store because I am on bedrest, so I decided, based on all assistance to go with the 2.0 mghz version of the notebook for $170.00 more... I got a great deal through a discount with my company and will let DH decide if we should buy the student/teacher version of word....
THANK YOU ALL!!! Hope he loves it...

Re: MAC Owners.. Questions...
what is the old speed, 1.8 or 1.6?
Prosscer speed upgrades are very hard to justfiy could you would never notice the difference. And really, depending on what you do on a day to day bases, it wouldn't make a difference. A faster processer will only use battery faster when not charged and the overall life as it needs more power to go faster.
1.6 i could understand paying a little more. If its 1.8, you can better use the money for other software, or whatever.
Memory "is" just as important as speed...
