Mad Men Creator Matthew Weiner Inks New Deal
The offices of Sterling Cooper will remain open for another two years at least — with Matthew Weiner.
After months of protracted negotiations, Mad Men mastermind Weiner has closed a two-year, seven-figure deal with Lionsgate TV to continue working on the AMC series, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
"Since the beginning, the show has been a charmed experience, made possible by my partnership with AMC and Lionsgate," Weiner says in a statement. "I am proud to work so closely with these two companies who love taking risks and value creativity and I am thrilled to get back to work with the most talented cast and crew in the business."
The agreement also includes a development pact for new shows and a feature film component. And no, it will not be Mad Men: The Movie, Lionsgate TV president, Kevin Beggs, says.
Weiner's original contract expired after the Emmy-winning series' second season conclusion in October. He entered negotiation talks with Lionsgate in September, seeking a hefty pay raise, which soured throughout the fall.
In October, AMC renewed Mad Men for a third season while looking into the possibility of replacing Weiner as showrunner.
Last week, as talks picked up pace again and days before the period advertising drama won its second-straight series Golden Globe, the network expressed optimism that Weiner's deal will be settled soon, putting the show on track for a summer return.
