*** Major dilemma ... is baseboard heating better than radiators?!!!
im getting conflicting reviews ... is it just appearance that makes them better? or do they save you money? are more efficient?
We ripped out all of our radiators to put baseboard heating in and the plumber acted like we were crazy!!
plus its costing major major major money to do!
we originally though his father could do it but then once everything was pulled out, he said no

It's technically the same type of heating system. We have radiators but are slowly replacing them with baseboard just because we like the look better.

Re: *** Major dilemma ... is baseboard heating better than radiators?!!!
From what I've heard...radiators work better, like they heat the house better..which I guess would save on heating costs.
I'm 99% sure the benefit to baseboards is just cosmetic.
We had baseboard in my parents house and it was always freezing! We have radiators here and it can get hot!

Older style upright cast-iron radiators are usually massive things, with most weighing a couple of hundred pounds. By their nature, they tend to radiate energy long after the heat has been shut off. In some cases, they can cause the room temperature to overshoot by a few degrees, but their overall comfort is superior to that of their cousins, the baseboard convectors. Radiators have some convective output, but it is minimal compared with their overall output potential.
Baseboard convectors, as their name implies, convey heat from hot water to air by means of convection. Their primary function is to provide a curtain of warm, rising air between you and the colder surface of a window or exterior wall. A small percentage of their output is radiant, but it’s typically less than 10% of their net output. Their net effect on the mean radiant temperature in a room is almost nil.

Re: *** Major dilemma ... is baseboard heating better than radiators?!!!
We're keeping our old school radiators. We talked to a few plumbers who said they give off more heat (so we can keep the temp lower) and it is very costly to replace them with baseboard. Also, they really fit the character of our house.

do the older radiators still get really hot to the touch? That would be my only concern if you have kids in the house.....

they do, but there are decorative covers you can put on them. This was my concern too with a little one on the way!

Have you considered Hydro-Sil baseboard heaters?
We have really inefficient forced air, so we installed those in some of the rooms and they're awesome!!!! They're never hot to the touch (which is great since we have little ones), they keep the room a consistent temp and you can adjust each room individually.

We had radiators with covers in our apt growing up and we never had any problems. They were also great for drying a clothing article a little faster or for warming it up before using it like a towel or sweater.

Re: *** Major dilemma ... is baseboard heating better than radiators?!!!
i've had both and i prefer radiators. i can't believe you're getting rid of yours!
my mom's house, which has old school radiators would get so nice and warm and stay that way. the radiators had covers so we used to sit on them and dry our clothes and shoes on them. plus our cats loved them!
now i have baseboards in my house and i'm not a fan. they get warm, but not in the same way. yes they're smaller and more inconspicuous, but i can't warm my tushy on them!

I really do prefer radiators to baseboards in terms of heating. Baseboards are nicer looking and take up less room but the older radiators get toasty.

Re: *** Major dilemma ... is baseboard heating better than radiators?!!!
We have radiators and I love them! They suit the style of the house and they are much warmer than the baseboard heating in my mom's house. We do need to get the covers made though since we are TTC and I think it'll be a significant expense since they are all different sizes.

I have baseboards and hate that I can't put anything flush against the wall.

Re: *** Major dilemma ... is baseboard heating better than radiators?!!!
I have radiators and I hate them. they are under the windows in our house and we are slowly replacing them with baseboard. We have done it in both our bathrooms and are about to do them in all of our 3 bedrooms. I dont' like the look of ours because they are in teh walls and to me are ugly.
I do really see the difference in baseboard and the radiators we have--to me they give off the same amount of heat and in some cases make the room warmer (that could also be becasue we replaced the windows in those rooms too)

Re: *** Major dilemma ... is baseboard heating better than radiators?!!!
Well, thanks for everyone for replying!! It has been a stressful situation but I think at the end of the day, Im happy that Ill have the baseboard heating since it looks nicer and such. As for the quality of how warm it gets, Ive only lived in homes with baseboard heating and Ive never had coldness issues (but I am always WARM) i hate putting the heat on anyway. so maybe thats a good thing! i just hope it all works out

I think whatever you decide will be fine-especially because you're used to the baseboard...

Re: *** Major dilemma ... is baseboard heating better than radiators?!!!
We have radiators and seem to heat the house fine but I prefer the look of baseboard and already changed out the bath...
now my moms house has radiators downstairs and baseboard upstairs and downstairs is always so cold in the winter and upstairs is always adequately heated...for some reason I think baseboard is more evenly distributed..

this could also be because heat rises...
