I'd do a search of the hit songs during the milestone years of their lives... high school graduation, dating, wedding song, popular songs when the kids were born etc.... of course, they don't have to be the exact year of an event if another song is a better fit.
I'd make it more the genre of music they like to listen to.

While it's not a melody I would choose, it's would probably be particularly meaningful to someone growing up in the 1950s.

Always - by Patsy Cline. It was my parents wedding son. At my wedding (they were both deceased) I danced to the song with my dad's best friend and had pictures of them playing in the background. It's such a pretty song and the lyrics are meaningful for all kinds of love.

When I made a video for my father's 50th I used Still the One by Orleans for his pictures with my mother and Old Days by Chicago for the pictures of him as a kid.
