Making basement more escapable in a fire?
WE have an apartment in our basement and we were discussing making it more escapable in a fire. It currently has one exit door and two small windows, regular basement size. The two things we were discussing, that I was wondering if anyone had info on or had done and had an approximate cost, were:
1) Making one of those windows and escape window. That would involve digging up the concrete wall and the paved area on the side of the house. Would alsop invovle moving pipes in the wall under the window. How expensive is that? Would that create possible leakes in the basement with water pooling in the are by that window?
2) Putting a door inbetween that side of the basement and ours, which is currently seperated by a solid wall. Shouldn't be any pipes there, just knocking out the wall and putting the door in. But what's the compromise to being something they can kick down or open to escape, that's also a noise buffer and stops someone from breaking into our side of the house from there?
Looking for ideas and info. Thanks.

We have option 2. We also have that door alarmed so if someone busts it open our house alarm will go off. Noise doesn't seem to be a problem but then we are hardly in our basement. It is a playroom and DD is to little to play down there yet.

This makes the most sense to me.

Didn't think about the alarm...that's a good idea. I think noise would be a problem for us because I'm in the basement a lot on the computer and on the treadmill with the TV loud to hear over it. It would be a noise problem for the other person, not so much us.

You don't have someone living there now?
