Making iPhone into just an Ipod Touch

Ok, someone gave me an iPhone 3G from AT&T, I don't want to use the iPhone as a phone but as an ipod touch.

I don't have an active AT&T Sim Card to put in the phone, does anyone know how to activate the phone so I can just use if for apps and music?

Maybe when my contract is up with Verizon I will activate the phone with AT&T but that won't happen until November.

just DL itunes and plug it into your pc and register and start it up.. that's it.
