Making your own baby food vs. buying organic jarred food... Am I missing something?
To me it was just easier to make my own food for DS. It never took long and I always had enough in one cooking to last a week. I think too many people think its harder and more time consuming than it is. It doesn't take long to boil or steam a few pieces of veggies.
We did organic fruit pouches and jars here and there - DS still likes them as snacks at 2.5 yrs old, but again it was just as easy to stew down a package of fresh organic strawberries or blueberries.
We ALWAYS cooked our own meats because IMO the meats were gross.

Veggies are cheaper to make in batches. I only buy her fruits in pouches.

i made my own for all of the reasons stated above but also because i worried that the jarred stuff is processed (they cook more of the nutrients out). i liked that i could lightly steam the veggies and puree them to just the right texture.

Lol love the honesty!!
I started feeling bad reading this thread bc we don't buy organic bc it is more expensive. I would if I could, but unfortunately we can't right now. So I make my dd's food mostly for cost reasons! She eats what's on sale!

I made my own. Fresh must be better than jarred, it just makes sense. Lol. Plus it was cheap and super easy. I will be doing this for number 2 also.

Re: Making your own baby food vs. buying organic jarred food... Am I missing something?
For us, it's just what seemed natural. We don't eat many jarred foods or canned foods in general, so I just didn't picture myself feeding that to my kids.
I did it for my first son and again for my twins. It's only a few months that they eat purees anyway! It wasn't all that time consuming and everything was yummy. Plus I got to use organic, seasonal veggies/fruits and make my own yummy combinations!
I don't think there's anything wrong with using organic, jarred food.... but for us it's just like I'd prefer to have homemade organic chocolate chip cookies over store-bought!

Yeah I don't think the non-organic has preservatives. Its just not made from organic fruit/veg. This is why I'm not hell- bent on giving organic.

Organic is food grown without pesticides and hopefully not genetically altered. I have read they splice pecticides into non organic food DNA which alters the DNA of the seeds to make them more resistant to pests. They are starting to outlaw this here and in other countries. I am not 100% on the details about that part of it. I read it somewhere or saw it on Dr OZ or something. Ever notice how huge some fruits, veggies and chickens are these days? It's not natural.
I am not 100% organic because it is hard to get everything organic but there are some things that you should by organic when you can. Certain fruits and veggies have more pesticides on them than others.

I made my own simply because it was cheaper. Between formula & jarred baby food it just made more sense to make it myself.

A lot of the jarred foods--even ones labeled organic--contained fish oil, gelatin, choline bitartrate (don't even know what that is!). The jars also have BPA in the lids. I just wasn't comfortable with it--simple as that. Everyone has to do what's best for them and their individual family.

But even the NON ORGANIC JARRED stuff has no preservatives. So what's the issue? When it came to making baby food, I was a FTWM and a very lazy person to boot and my mantra was: "Ain't nobody got time fo that!"

Do they still even make jars? All the stuff I bought was in little plastic containers. Not glass jars with lids. Gerber is not in jars anymore. Nor is the store brands.

I did it because:
1. It's much cheaper. Yes, organic fruits and veggies can be pricey, but one batch would last a long time.
2. The taste is different and I wanted DD to know the real taste of fruits and veggies vs the jarred taste.
Same for us. Word for word.

Yes they still make jars. Earth's Best and Beech*Nut are sold in jars--among others I'm sure.
And the ingredients listed above were in Gerber's organic foods (green beans and squash).

The ingrediants in the non organic gerber green beans and squash are exactly the same. I checked when I was buying them back then. Green beans, water. Squash, water. No preservatives listed at all.

Re: Making your own baby food vs. buying organic jarred food... Am I missing something?
i did it b.c i enjoyed doing it. i controlled the texture- meaning it wasn't pureed and boiled to smithereens.
i found that my kids all adapted well to thicker chunkier textures as well as a variety of flavors!
i work full time and at times it was a little tricky ( i get home around 730) but it was always worth it.
batch steaming and pureeing over the weekends is a good way to stock pile and get ahead.

Re: Making your own baby food vs. buying organic jarred food... Am I missing something?
I make my own because I can get several more servings out of a bunch of organic carrots etc for the cost of 1 jar. I can afford to feed my baby all jarred food but it makes me feel good to make it homemade. And I can also make a wider variety of recipes than I can find in the baby aisle.

Earth's Best does not contain that cr@p. I came across that in Gerber's organic prunes and returned them when I realized it (before giving it to DD, thankfully!). As long as you can read, you can avoid that stuff.
