Overall I feel that homemade baby food is turning into this new badge of honor in the mommy wars. I have heard a lot of holier-than-thou "My baby has NEVER eaten food from a jar!" claims. Like there was rat poison in the jar.

I did both. I did find with some pouches that they offered different combinations that I could never 'cook' up.

Lol!
I have no time to make it with my second baby! I am running low on jars and I don't even have time to go buy it!! I use earths best and buy it when it's on sale. I stock up and buy a million jars so I don't have to go to the store very often!

Re: Making your own baby food vs. buying organic jarred food... Am I missing something?
I made my LO food. I found it to be very inexpensive to do compared to jar food. It didn't take long to do and it didn't take away time from my family. She was always in the kitchen with me. I guess it helps that I love to cook. You need to do what works best for you and your family.
Oh and I would buy a few jars of Earths Best to see how she liked it before I made it.
Really don't get the Badge thing

Huh???
Sorry thats a bit much. I don't 'wear a badge of honor' because I made my DS his own food. No one way is better than the other.
It was easier for us to just make DS his food. I never thought I was better then my SIL who had a baby a few days before me and fed my niece mostly jarred food.
I guess its like those who BF vs FF. I was constantly being told 'breast is best'. I didn't care, I FF because it was what was best for me and DS. I live my life, no one else.

While you don't wear it like a badge of honor there are plenty of people that preach it much like the FF vs BF. So I think that is why the comment was made.

If the responses on here were "oh your lazy, makinng it is sooooooooooo much better" blah blah I could understand the comment. Aside from the organic part of this thread I think most who make our own food were being kool
Forget about wearing a badge for BF and making LO food I want a freakin BADGE for making DH some kickasss dinners

I personally think this is ridiculous because IRL unless someone saw me bringing and feeding my child homemade baby food I NEVER brought it up or mentioned it to people! I could care less what they think - I do what's best for my baby - period
That said - my kids are now 3 and 5 so, I'm not sure if my feelings on the subject are outdated (maybe there have been changes in baby food since then) but, there was an entire thread on this issue back when my kids were younger and this is what I wrote as to why I personally chose to make food when I could. did I always do it - no. especially with my second there were times when I would bring jars when it was easier etc.
My old post: First,IMO,it gives them more nutrients - I think most of the jarred baby food is watered down to the extreme and cooked to death. For ex. Earth's best fruits all have vitamin c in the form of ascorbic acid added back into the fruit - doesn't fruit have vitamin C? Ex. 2. Look at a chicken or turkey dinner jar - what does it have like 2g of protien in a 4oz jar? And 4% of iron? That just doesn't make sense if you think of even 2oz of meat. Also, as I said the organic brand, earth's best adds ascorbic acid to their fruits - it comes from CHina - USDA does not certify there so there is no way its organic and who know what's in it!
i do use jars sometimes when needed (out etc.) but, i try not to make a habit of it.
ETA: Here is the old thread for your reference: LINK My old post:

Re: Making your own baby food vs. buying organic jarred food... Am I missing something?
This tread has generally been fine but there are plenty on her that will list every little thing in jarred food...you know what, I read my labels and know that stuff is in there and still don't give a poo and feed it to my kid. Rather than people jsut saying I make my own and move on they have to say I make my own cause there is rat poison int he jarred stuff.
It is def much like the BF vs FF. And I get that people are passionate about their beliefs but as much as people read the labels and care whats in there I know whats in my kids food and I do not care cause if I was that worried about it I would not be fedign it to them. My kid is eating Kraft and it makes all of us happy, he is eating yellow american cheese (gasp, I know its not even really chesse).
Its just that these posts do get preachy at times and I think it does get to people....we are all moms and doing what we feel is best for our families and who cares what someone else does....people can feed their kids dog food for all I care. I only worry about my family.

Re: Making your own baby food vs. buying organic jarred food... Am I missing something?
I am currently doing both. Today's variety of organic baby food is amazing and I definitely stock up on those when they go on sale so that I have options when I'm on the go or running low on my home made food. I make my own food because as other posters mentioned, I like the taste better and I can't fathom giving him meat in a jar. So the majority of my home made food involve chicken or fish. But I also make a large batch of apples, pears, carrots, sweet potatoes, etc. because he loves those and I like to mix them up and change things around to give him a wide variety with a protein.

I would buy the Gerber box cereal, but I would make the fruits and veggies. I am so upset because after my youngest I threw out my baby food grinder and I can't find that same one anywhere.

They use ascorbic acid in foods to replace nutrients lost in processing but also as a natural preservative to stabilize them and prevent foods from browning.

I will take a badge! I am proud to say I made my own baby food. Why else would I have done it? It was important to me.

I dont understand either? Are people projecting insecurities? I have not yet made food, but I will. Maybe I'll do some jarred stuff but I dont really see the need.

A lot of people, like myself, who made their own food did so bc they enjoy cooking and it is just how they do things. My mother made my food for me 30 years ago, we are people who cook, we don't often eat prepared foods (other than when we eat out, like wise my DS ate jars when we were out ) so why wouldn't we do the same for our children? It not a badge of honor but rather just cultural I guess.

But see I don;t think that comment about the Badge is directed towards all....Its towards the ones that get preachy. And I have come across many of the preachy ones IRL.

I did it because:
1. It's much cheaper. Yes, organic fruits and veggies can be pricey, but one batch would last a long time.
2. The taste is different and I wanted DD to know the real taste of fruits and veggies vs the jarred taste.
This exactly, I did it with my 3YO and plan on doing it with my next... I thought it was sooo easy, Honestly I feel like I did it 1-2x a month and had a stock pile for weeks!

LOL EXACTLY (about the formula) and the foods..
To those who say it a badge of pride to say I feed my child home made foods only as if they are better than others.. yes I've heard it and it annoys me. They look at me and I say "Oh I'm not better .. just poor!" LOL
Yes its a badge of honor to feed my child what I feel is nutrious and made in my own home. But I didn't buy organic all the time etc. I just felt it was easier. Then again I also fed her formula.. the HORROR!
