I did it because:
1. It's much cheaper. Yes, organic fruits and veggies can be pricey, but one batch would last a long time.
2. The taste is different and I wanted DD to know the real taste of fruits and veggies vs the jarred taste.
This exactly, I did it with my 3YO and plan on doing it with my next... I thought it was sooo easy, Honestly I feel like I did it 1-2x a month and had a stock pile for weeks!
Same here with my kids. Initially, DH wasn't on board with my plan to make food (organic or not). He didn't think the taste could be that different between the jarred and homemade one if both had the same ingredients (vegetable, water). I gave him a blind taste test between Earth's Best sweet potatoes and some roasted sweet potatoes that I pureed. He was sold after that.
Also, I found it easier to just blend whatever we were normally eating for dinner and let my kids have that when they were on baby food. The transition to table food was a lot easier for them.
I never looked at it as a badge of honor. It's simply what I wanted to do for them because I like to cook.

I tried to do the homemade route but that whole first year was a major blur and I was just trying to survive it. I did as much organic as I could be it home made or store bought. Mostly pouches but some jarred and canned. Ideally it is better to do home made since everything is freshest, there are no additives, diminished nutrients, not stored in plastic or BPA leaching lids and less/no pesticides if you do organic.
However that is the ideal. Not everyone can do ideal. If we could we would all have an immaculate house and be the perfect weight. :o) Yes, breast is best and in an ideal world for most of the population breast feeding would be exclusively done all the way thru. Luckily the human body is able to survive on less than ideal or else millions of people would be in a whole lot of trouble.

I made my own because I am a control freak and want to know exactly what is going into my baby's body. The jarred foods may be organic but they are still made in a processing plant.

I started off making all of DD's food but I have to say, a lot of the times it was more expensive. Take pears for instance. You need 3 or 4 pears to equal one jar of baby food. When they're out of season, that's like $2.50 for fresh organic pears, that you then have to peel, cook, and mash... or you could buy jarred for $0.89. Apples too - it's such a PITA and time-consuming to make, when you can just get a huge jar of unsweetened organic applesauce (NOT baby food!) for about 1/4 the price.
Some foods were really cost-effective though, like squash or sweet potatoes. And then there were things like avocado, which is so delicious straight-up peeled and mashed and you can't get that in a jar. If you find avocados cheap, btw, mash them and freeze them in ice cube trays - they freeze GREAT.
