Don't feel stupid, now you know.
Breed-specific rescues are great resources nowadays because they pull the breeds out of the shelters before they can be euthanized, socialize them in foster homes, and then get them forever homes.
A majority of the dogs found in these rescues are purebreds or very close to it. That's how we found our 2nd dog, and people who don't know the breed think she's a mix but she looks identical to a purebred.
The issues with these trendy mixes is that they're just that - mixes - and the "breeders" are touting them as these valuable things that command high prices. Anyone who exploits a trend to make money cannot be considered reputable because their very first and only loyalty is not to the dog. It's making money, and that's reprehensible. They don't have medical histories going back generations, they don't know the long term affects of mixing these breeds, they don't get the proper health clearances or selectively breed the healthiest and most well adjusted dogs to improve the breed. They just. make. money.
Sorry for the long post. I didn't answer before because I didn't want to come off preachy but you sound like you're open to the information, so I'm sharing with you.

Re: maltipoo or shitpoo??
If she wants a small dog that's a purebreed then she can get a yorki, shitzu, westie, etc.

Re: maltipoo or shitpoo??
Been avoiding this thread so I don't lecture on irresponsible breeders, but others have covered that...
Just one thing to add -- it's a SHIH poo, not a shitpoo.

reputable breeders don't breed mixes. Ditto. They have not tested the effects of the mixed genes long enough to be considered a viable breed.
Cockerpoos have taken over 2 decades to become even condisered a legitimate breed.
I suggest rescue, and look at the dog as an original, not as the "breed standard" because there really is none.
Best of Luck.
