Re: Mandatory Pet Shots

I would check with your local town requirements, but here is a guide:
clicky

Most vets do a 5in1 or a 6in1 plus rabies.

Re: Mandatory Pet Shots

You may want to talk to the vet about some optional shots, like bordatella and lepto, depending on what is a problem in your area.

Also, you prob want to start on heartwoerm meds, if you haven't alreadyChat Icon

ITA. I have to admit I do not give my smaller dogs the Lepto shots, and because I live in a high risk area for Lepto, they are strictly indoor dogs.

We give Katie 2 optional shots that I think should be mandatory: Lepto (can get this from Squirrels) and Lymes (we take her to Fire Island).

The Lepto shot is still pretty new & is a little controversial as far as its use in small dogs (under 5 lbs). The Lepto shot is mandatory for licensing a dog in the town of Babylon, but since my dogs are so small the vet wrote a medical thing to the town.

The lepto shot is "revamped" every season in an attempt to make it safer.Chat Icon

FYI, my vet advises against Lymes and so do many dog clubs

I don't know if you live in Suffolk but if you do I have an AMAZING vet to recommend.

Center Moriches Animal Hospital.
Dr. Duffy or Dr. Burka 631-878-0050.
Even if you don't want to go there you can just call and ask general questions. The staff is amazing =)

From what I understand, they are not sure it works and there have been some dogs who had very strong reactions to it. You can do flea and tick repellent (like Frontline). Talk to your vet and see what he/she says. There are concerns about over-vaccinating dogs.

Katie tends to have reactions to all shots so she is always given Benadryl first. We tried Frontline but she wound up getting a horrible rash from it. She's on Sentinal for flees. With the frequency we take them to Fire Island the vet reccomends it. Chat Icon

Yes, lepto is controversial too. I leave near a state park where lepto has been found and my vet recommends it (even though Denver's breeder was very opposed to it) so we get it. We don't do bordatella (though I would if we boarded them or brought them to dog parks) or lyme's.
