Marathoners, please come in. Training timing question.
I've been wanting to train for a marathon for, well, ever! I've set my sights on Chicago 2011 for a whole list of reasons, both training/fitness related and personal as well.
My question is this: Once I select a marathon training program that I think will work best for me (I'm currently strongly considering Hal Higdon's), what would you recommend I do in the interim? I mean I don't think I can start a marathon training program now so I'm kind of wondering what I should focus on first. Distance? Speed? Both?
I'm sorry if these seem like stupid questions. I'm a novice when it comes to training for anything longer than a 10K.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Marathoners, please come in. Training timing question.
base building. You want to get to a point where 12 mile runs are your easy week.
You might want to consider a half marathon before (LI half would be good timing). That way it gives you a better idea of what your marathon pace might be - it's also a good way to build your base.
I'm pretty sure that Hal Higdon has a base building plan - but I'm not sure for what level. I usually take HH's plans and tweek them to fit my needs (which is totally fine to do).
just FYI with Chicago - make sure that you find out the day registration begins. Boston closed out in ONE day (used to take MONTHS and that's with time qualifications) two of my marathons sold out and they have never sold out before! Marathons are getting popular and you don't want to scramble (like I had to) over the summer or worse - a month before.

I agree that you should start with a half marathon program and then that will be a great base for a full program. I used Hal Hidgon's for a 10k and half and both worked great! I'm just finishing his full marathon schedule and am running my first marathon in less than two weeks! I'm so nervous, but so excited! Good luck!

Thanks! I was thinking of doing the AHEPA Half Marathon at the end of March. Do you think that would be a good race with regards to judging timing for Chicago?

I don't know much about that race, but is it flat? Chicago is a flat race, so a flat HM will give you the best idea. If it's hilly, than you should expect to do a little better than the calculators say.
March would be a good time for a HM. You could start training for that around the holidays and then jump into the 30 week program (you might have to eliminate some weeks, but I know you are in shape that some of those early weeks will be too easy for you.)

It's very flat. It starts at SCCC Ammerman campus off of Nicolls Road in Selden and goes down Nicolls and back around. There are some hills but nothing like what you find in Northport for Cow Harbor or even in Pt Jeff where I do my hill training. It's actually right by my neighborhood which is why I thought it could be good.
I was actually thinking of doing the HH 1/2 marathon training schedule and picking up the 30 week program after that. Does that make sense?

Re: Marathoners, please come in. Training timing question.
Yes I agree with the other girls and start with a 10k then maybe a 15k and then finally a half marathon. I would aim for a half marathon in May...that way your base is built and June/July you can start adding on slowly for Chicago.
Also by doing a half marathon, you will be able to decide how you like running and if you are up for the challenge of a full marthon. (Or are you a runner already??). It will also help you to see how your body and knees hold up. I have some friends who have bad knees and cannot go any further than 13 miles. ALSO some people do a half marathon and say thats enough for me but others are encouraged to do more and go further!!! So maybe you can do 2 half marathons or is that too much??
I did 3 last year...March, April and May - all great times of the year to run!
