From this point on, I plan on masking every flu season. Especially when in crowded indoor places.
I don't trust people to stay home when they're sick.
Yup! Me too.
Same. I remember going to Home Depot for the kid craft in Feb 2020 and this woman next to me sounded like she was going to die. Flu was rampant in my area. She was coughing, sneezing, and had a sore throat.

If you have to be out and about while sick and need to be near people I think it makes a lot of sense. It's been lovely the last two years to not get my annual nasty ass sinus infection.
ITA about paid sick leave as well.
My understanding is that the immunity thing is true for children but not for adults. I actually think I read that from someone on here who described why or maybe posted an article. But I am not 100% on who it was and I don't want to put anyone on the spot lol.
Yes. I remember that post too. I think germs and virus exposure are 2 different things as well.
And everyone Can agree on ample sick time but let’s be honest, can any job afford people to take off 5 days every time they get a cold ? It’s pretty impossible for most professions that have to be I person. Especially a service job.
FWIW if we ever get paid sick leave I think small businesses should be eligible for some kind of tax credit or something to offset the costs. Mid and large sized companies I don't feel sorry for because if you scale up that big you can afford to take care of your people but I get that small business are a different animal.
I wish we could also do something about the stigma of taking sick time. My old, old job from many years ago had several assholes who mocked people for taking the time they needed. I remember getting the worst sinus infection ever. I could barely move my head off the pillow and my face was actually swollen. I don't know how I even got to the doctor but once I did he said it was one of the worst cases he had ever seen and gave me a bunch of scripts. I took two days off in a row and you would have thought the world stopped spinning on its axis. And I've heard much worse stories than that - people getting fired, etc. It's not ok.

Do many of you not have paid sick leave? I work for a relatively large company and we have plenty of paid sick leave In fact, as of this moment, I'm sitting at 480 hours of it because I never use it (worked from home anytime I felt under the weather and now work from home all the time so unless I'm too sick to work at all, which is super rare, I don't use my sick time and it rolls over and accumulates). But do large companies NOT give paid sick leave in general? (I do agree with you about being looked down on for using the sick time in certain industries and with certain bosses for using it. And now with the remote working culture I assume that's even worse because they think, well if you are sick, just stay home and work from there)

I don’t get paid sick leave, just PTO, and since I haven’t been at my company too long I don’t get too much but I am able to work from home (even before Covid)

You hit the nail on the head- it’s given, but frowned upon to take it.

Sorry, when I said "we" I didn't mean I didn't have it (I'm in education.) I meant for it to be mandated for society in general at either the state or the federal level.
Probably most medium and large companies have it, although certainly not all. And small businesses often don't.

My DH has unlimited sick time and can easily work from home.
I teach and get 10 sick days a year and 5 personal days. 5 of the sick days are deemed family sick.
I won’t lie - in the past if I was sick with a cold (cough, sore throat) - I’d go into work. It honestly is/was more of a pain in the ass to take a sick day than just to go in. If we call in sick, we’re still expected to have detailed plans for each day. I have 1-2 emergency plans to cover me but after that I’m planning lessons while sick for the sub to do, but subs rarely follow what you plan, which is another problem. So if I was not “that sick” I would go in. Also you are required to get a doctors note if you are out for more than 3 days in a row, which seems like just another reason why people would come into sick work as taking days off is frowned upon by administration. My principal will set up a meeting with you if he/she feel you have taken too much sick time even if you have the time AND you have documentation from a doctor. This is literally the problem.

My last job I had a total of 6 weeks each year to take however I wanted to. They also allowed roll overs. I took a lot of it when I got laid off. My new(er) job I now get 23 PTO days but can’t roll over.
