Maternity Leave-When to talk to your boss?
When will you be talking to your boss about who takes your responsibilities while you're gone?
I'm due Xmas Day-I'm thinking I should do it around November 1. Is that too early?

Re: Maternity Leave-When to talk to your boss?
i think i started talking to my boss in late aug/early sept. I met with HR first and then started talking to the boss.
your boss will appreciate talking this out early b/c if they need to hire someone that may need approval from the company (as in my case).
i think early nov before all the holiday madness starts will be enough time.

Re: Maternity Leave-When to talk to your boss?
I am due November 12 and I spoke to her last week about what my plans were as far as how long I am taking off. I think she is in denial about who is going to take over my work, so she keeps brushing me off when I mention that. I also don't think she realizes how much work I do.

Re: Maternity Leave-When to talk to your boss?
honestly I told my MGR that I was taking all the time allowed from the company and left the work issues to mgmt. it's not for you to keep chasing your boss to figure out who is going to do the work. it will get done one way or another while you are out, so don't stress yourself!

Re: Maternity Leave-When to talk to your boss?
I think as soon as possible. I have someone due the end of march and we have already decided who will take over for her and what not.
I am due in mid Jan and it was decided in August the plan for when i'm out.

Re: Maternity Leave-When to talk to your boss?
I have my list together and I"m hoping to talk to my boss by the end of the month/beginning of Nov (I'm due a week before you).
I have a lot of things to transition so I need to train people before I go out as well on them.

I don't think its your responsibility to source replacements for your leave, that should be your companys issues.

Re: Maternity Leave-When to talk to your boss?
I'm due March 7th and will prob be having my c-section on the 5th. I will talk to my boss in the beg of Feb just to firm up dates. He'll have to figure out who's doing what while I am gone.

Unless you want to walk into a clusterfuck upon your return.
I'm due in March; already have my team briefed on how duties will be split up and how they will report to while I'm out.
Gives me from now till March to get everyone trained and comfortable with their temporary responsibilities.
I think how much advance work you do with your boss is dependant on your position and the industry you work in.

I can assure you that I will not be arranging one thing to do with my maternity leave except for the date I will be finishing, and I will not be walking into anything untoward when I return in a years time. I work for the number six company in the Sunday Times best companies to work for in the UK. I can assure that maternity leave cover is something they do quite well. I didn't arrange a thing with my last maternity leave and I walked back into my job with an 18% payrise.
Congratulations on your pregnancy! I didn't know you were expecting!

Re: Maternity Leave-When to talk to your boss?
I told my boss I was pregnant when I was 12 wks. I had to have the leave papers in 30 days before my expected leave...other than that-I don't have the type of job where my duties need to be assigned to someone else.

Re: Maternity Leave-When to talk to your boss?
I already know who will be taking over my responsibilities while I'm out.
There are only a few people in my dept and they will all be helping out. Same goes when anyone goes out.

thanks.
I'm sure firms in the UK are more organzied in these areas.
Over here it seems you need to cover your own *** or the return is painful. I was out last week on vacation; everyone knew I would be out of the office yet I walked back in to over 900 emails and 3 projects with Monday deadline. Its enough to make you loathe time out of the office.

Re: Maternity Leave-When to talk to your boss?
I told my manager I was pregnant at 15 weeks and we basically started the discussion then.
We talked about what I can get done before I go (the business I am in is cyclical so we can plan ahead) and what responsibilities will be shared by others.
Formal arrangements were made when I started my third trimester.
