Re: McCain's speech

He was very good. He is not the most charismatic man in my opinion but he was very powerful with his words. I liked that he covered some of his plans with regards to education and training, creation of jobs, finding alternative energy sources, including nuclear and of course his view on the war and working with both parties. I like that he mentioned having democrats as part of his administration. I truly believe this man wants people to work together and will stick to his word--something I don't often feel one can typically say when talking about politics. I think he also made some strong points about his foreign policy beliefs. The closing when he spoke about being a POW and how it changed him was extremely powerful to me. I think that portion of his life has helped lead him to this point and I think he brought that all together in a very moving way. He is a man of great character, no on can deny that and I see why so many democrats like him, including the Clintons.

A VERY different speech than Gov. Palin but just as effective in my mind.

Re: McCain's speech

I thought it was a great speech. He's learned to lock it up and not ad-lib like he did early on.

Agree with a PP, had he not chosen Palin, I would have seriously considered voting for him and voted R for Pres and VP for the first time in my life. But she is just too far down the spectrum for me.

i thought he gave a great speech and i liked that he didn't spend time bashing obama, of course he mentioned him a couple of times
he focused on himself which i think is what they should do
can't wait for the debates

No, he didn't have to bash Obama, he had Sarah Palin do that yesterday.

I don't have a problem with McCain as a person. I do admire his service to our country. I will not vote for him because I do not agree with his policies.

Much like Obama had Biden bash McCain for him?

I think one of the most important things he stated in his speech was that we need to put people in Washington that can work together to make our country great[Both Republicans and Democrats] This butting heads between the president and congress needs to cease for us to be able to move forward.

I agree.
As I've said before, I've only had the opportunity to read the speeches, not see them - but I think his was the best out of all of them.

This was a bit too much for me though:

Russia's leaders, rich with oil wealth and corrupt with power, have rejected democratic ideals and the obligations of a responsible power. They invaded a small, democratic neighbor to gain more control over the world's oil supply, intimidate other neighbors and further their ambitions of reassembling the Russian empire.

Just remove 'Russia'

Agreed. I'm also glad he spoke a little bit about his POW experience. It puts a lot in perspective for me.

Chat Icon what he had to endure for 5 years is unimaginable

So, does this mean you are voting for McCain? Chat Icon

Yes, you've got me there - I wouldnt' exactly say Iraq was a democratic neighbor - but it is very clear that the US's involvement in Iraq is driven by the desire, some would say need, to control the oil market.

His speech strengthened my decision to vote for him, absolutely. I happen to agree with his policies, but not only that, respect him 100%. I can't say that for many other politicians, past or present.

Good speech, so was everyone else's except Guiliani's.

Debates...that's what I'm waiting for. I'm still not voting for McCain mostly because of Palin.

Very sad about his POW experience. Sounds surreal.

I would be curious to see how his speech differed from the past republican speeches. I may look that up and compare.

I thought the speech was decent. He's not a great speaker, but he's certainly better than Bush.
His time in the military and as a POW is very admirable, but knowing how he came home and ran around on his wife and then left her for a 25 year old limits the amount of respect I have for him. I know it was over 30 years ago, but a man with so little personal integrity makes me doubt his integrity in general. Of course I feel the same way about Clinton, Edwards, Spitzer and every other politicial who has been involved in something similar. I have a hard time trusting any politicians at this point.

ITA. The Reagans, who were good friends with them, never wanted to have anything to do with McCain after he left his wife who waited and prayed for him while he was a POW. And all because he wasn't attracted to her anymore. Chat Icon

I hope they don't make men like that anymore, though of course i know they do.

Do we know for a fact this is how his divorce happened? I feel like after being in that situation for 5 years, alot can change about a person. He probably needed serious counseling after that experience. I'm not making excuses for him, but who knows what his state of mind was after getting back. He may have freaked! Was this discussed in any of his memoirs? I'm curious to find out.

Re: McCain's speech

McCain has never been considered a great orator - so I thought he did a great job given the relatively low expectations for his delivery.

I particularly liked how he admitted to the Republican party screwing up badly over the last 8 years.

I wont be voting for him - but if he wins it will be nice to respect the man who is our President again.

He did a good job. He doesn't have the same skill as Pallin or Obama (but most people do not), but he did a good job with a simple, straightforward speech. I would have liked more meat in it since I'm still not clear on what he will do, but as a pp said, no one really does that in these convention speeches.

I would have certainly given him more consideration if he chose another running mate. At this point, it's safe to say the only way I can see myself possibly voting for McCain/Palin is if Obama is caught selling crack to children and using the money to hire prostitutes.

I wonder if he did himself a favor appealing to the conservative base or not. Possibly though--those voters are unlikely to go for Obama, but independents could really go either way.

Re: McCain's speech

I fell asleep before the POW experience part so maybe that would have impressed me (speech-wise) more. I like him (as a person - I've met and spoken to him on a few occasions), but I thought the speech was mediocre, or at least his delivery of it. But, again, I think he had a tough act to follow.

Undoubtedly he suffered (perhaps still does) from PTSD. How could he not? But that's what a lot of staff here quietly talk about...more than the temper issues that have been rumored. If this stuff is true, it is not only sad, but a little worrisome.

I've been a follower of his since the time he spoke to my class at USNA and told us all that he talked about last night and then some (I actually thought about reregistering in 2000 so I could vote in the primary for him), so it truly pains me that I can't vote for him this time. Chat Icon
