I didn't live in the city during the Dinkins years, (and yes he was a disaster), but I know about them very well...btw you could walk the streets, maybe it wasn't the Disneyland with no personality that it is now but that's not my point. I did agree that rudy cleaned up Times Square, among other things. But that's not my beef with him, it's as I said, he's a slimeball and a crook and he continually "uses" 9/11 to his advantage and unfortunately people only see this 9/11 image of him walking down the street amongst the rubble view him as a "hero". That's my issue.
But this is totally not the thread topic and I probably shouldn't have said anything as we're totally hijacking. (sorry OP)
um, I have lived in the city my entire life...since 1975.
I dont' remember a time when you "couldn't walk the streets" probably b/c I don't remember much before 5 years old
I thank Guiliani for taking away all the squeegie guys...though it's not a fun taking family and friends to the Disney world that is now times square

Re: McCain's speech
you know as disgusting as they were sometimes I miss the squeegie guys. That's what I mean about the city losing it's personality through all this clean up, I like clean, don't get me wrong, but there's no quirks like that anymore. I avoid Times Square at all costs, to me the corporate Disneyland is nauseating but IF it makes money for the city than I guess live and let live. And yes, that's what I'm saying, I didn't live in the city then though we did visit family, and i don't ever remember being scared or my parents being scared of me walking down the street. I live here now and I have friends who live in the suburbs and their jaws drop when they hear that we might stay in the city after we have the baby. (ugh, the horror )

don't even get me started on guiliani--i want to throw up when i see his face.
totally off topic but I just had to agree. I see him on TV spouting off about 9/11 cause it's ALL HE HAS to hold on to and try and remain relevant, and people get sucked in, time and time again, Rudy's a hero, Rudy's amazing, blah blah blah. Capitalizing on human tragedy is real heroic and he does it EVERY TIME he speaks. Ugh, makes me sick. Sure he cleaned up Times Square, but he's a crook and he surrounds himself with other crooks. Sorry, he just gets me riled up. And I voted for him too. Never again!
sorry, but I fully disagree...rudy was the best thing to ever happen to NYC - you probably weren't around in the Dinkins years when the city was in the worst depression in years, businesses and people were leaving in droves and noone could walk the streets. i agree that he should lay off the 9/11 stuff b/c it is getting a little old, but if it wasn't for him, NYC would have crumbled.
I had to comment on this--totally off topic too! The city was a mess in the Dinkins years, and I lived there during that time. I voted for Rudy the first time around, and initially, I thought he did a great job. The second time around, I had some reservations, but I wasn't thrilled with the other choice, so I voted for Rudy again. If it were not for 9-11, he would have left office a highly unpopular mayor. He became tyranical and picked fights with every dept. of city govt. possible, except perhaps the NYPD. totally lacking in diplomacy or an ability to negotiate.
I think he's good at cleaning up a big mess, but when the mess is gone, he is too micro managing and pushy to move things to the next level. Also, Bloomberg deserves more credit than he gets for saving the city from economic ruin--remember he took over just a couple months after 9-11.
Okay, off topic rant over!

I think one of the most important things he stated in his speech was that we need to put people in Washington that can work together to make our country great[Both Republicans and Democrats] This butting heads between the president and congress needs to cease for us to be able to move forward.
I agree. As I've said before, I've only had the opportunity to read the speeches, not see them - but I think his was the best out of all of them.
This was a bit too much for me though:
Russia's leaders, rich with oil wealth and corrupt with power, have rejected democratic ideals and the obligations of a responsible power. They invaded a small, democratic neighbor to gain more control over the world's oil supply, intimidate other neighbors and further their ambitions of reassembling the Russian empire.
Just remove 'Russia' are you asserting that Iraq was a democratic nation?
eta: if we went to Iraq to "steal" or control their oil, how is it possible that oil prices have never been higher and Iraq has a 79 billion $ revenue stream from oil.
Yes, you've got me there - I wouldnt' exactly say Iraq was a democratic neighbor - but it is very clear that the US's involvement in Iraq is driven by the desire, some would say need, to control the oil market. well if that was the plan, boy did we fail!

Gulliani brings it up because that is all that he has on a national front. Unfortunately though, it's not just Gulliani that brings up 9/11 every 30 seconds it is a theme within the conservative party. They feed off of people's fears and that IMO is not heroic or honorable.
