Medical benefits: Anyone have duel coverage?

Just wondering if anyone has medical benefits through your job, but also has coverage with DH. What are the pros and cons?

DH doesnt have a great plan, but there are certain benefits he has that I dont.

Just wondering if its worth the money to have both of us under each plan.

Re: Medical benefits: Anyone have duel coverage?

We are going to be doing this come Jan. We missed the cutoff after we got married for me to go on DH's insurance. We both have great plans but he has a better vision plan then mine. I wear contacts & am considering lasik & his insurance has coverage.

For us, the money I spent on contacts & check ups, is more then what we pay out for each of us to carry insurance.

Oh i see, so you mean some benefits with him and some with you - not full coverage from both jobs.

Re: Medical benefits: Anyone have duel coverage?

Not for medical but for dental we have coordination of benefits. Dental plans tend to suck so we wanted more coverage.

I also just added DH to my vision plan since I have some coverage for lasik and he doesn't have any.

There is no benefit to being on each other's medical plan with most plans that have network in/out benefits.

I do. Both of our insurance plans are non-contributory, but also my company does not allow an employee to turn down the coverage.

The pros - everything is usually paid.

The cons - paperwork is a hassle. Most companies argue over which insurance to take because my coverage pays them more. They have to take his insurance first because his birthday falls first in the year.

No we are both covered fully under our own plans...my insurance is primary so if my insurance does not cover it, then it goes over to his. I grew up w/having it that way also & it always worked out. Luckily all of our DR's are covered with both plans

Re: Medical benefits: Anyone have duel coverage?

I would be looking for full coverage for both of us.
I have a great vision plan and DH doesnt have any at all. He also pays a lot for specialists and needs referrals, but my plan covers all that.
His plan reimburses him for most of his prescriptions and medical supplies, while I have to pay for daily medication (which gets expensive) and my diabetes supplies. His also reimburses him for his full gym membership. So I as thinking of putting him under my plan and going under his. I guess I would have to do the math and figure out which is more cost effective.

Re: Medical benefits: Anyone have duel coverage?

I have both coverage for me at my job and under my Dh's insurance. If I elect not to take the insurance at my job, and my DH loses his job, I dont want to be without insurance. I dont know...and dont want to find out,,,that if something like that happened, could I get insurance through my company, IF I wasnt a subscriber? I have the single plan and he has the family plan.

almost 2 years ago i had a very expensive operation and thank god I had 2 insurances...because evreything was paid for except for $500...total cost was around $75K!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

If you lost your job you would be able to get on his plan. Sorry to hear about your operation.
