Medical Records
Anyone know what the typical fee is for a copy of your medical records (an "Attending Physician's Statement" per my life insurance company)? My doctor's office charges $250 (which sound outrageous to me) and the insurance company said the standard fee is $75 and won't pay it.

Re: Medical Records
my doctor doesn't charge anything. That's ludicrous!
Most medical records there is a charge but it's per page.

Re: Medical Records
there is a flat rate, which used to be like $.25 per page.
your doctors office is supposed to count the pages and multiply it by the flat page rage.
they are NOT supposed to charge a flat rate to you OR YOUR insurance company.

Re: Medical Records
Is it a copy of a document that already exists in your medical file, or are they asking the physician to prepare a statement?

Re: Medical Records
They are only allowed to charge you .75 per page and they can charge you a service charge if there is "extra" work involved in preparing what you want. Do you know any attorneys? They can submit the HIPAA for you

Re: Medical Records
There is a difference between an attending physician's statement and copies of records. Copies of medical records cannot exceed 75 cents a page in NY. Click here for a state by state breakdown of rules for copying fees For completion of forms and for narrative reports, the sky's the limit. I have seen many doctors charge nothing at all and I have seen prices as high as about $650, usually negotiable. Doctors who have known the patient for a long time are usually more willing to assist. The high fees for reports are one of my pet peeves and I make sure that my clients know if their doctors are unreasonable.
