Re: Medication and Pregnancy/TTC (x-post)
Hi, I am not ttc yet, but I have asked my doctor about the SSRI medication that I am taking for anxiety/panic attacks. He told me to stop taking them (slowly/ween myself off) when I plan on ttc. Some women stay on them but I have been doing research on my meds and it is now showing that in the 3rd trimester it has been known to cause lung problems with the fetus.
It is very nerve racking, but I would talk to my doctor to get the info that you need.

Depends on the medication, talk to your dr. it depends on how important the medication is to your condition. They may be able to switch your medication if yours is a class D, like xanax.

Re: Medication and Pregnancy/TTC (x-post)
I would suggest that you speak with your doctor and let him/her know that you will be TTC very soon. They will be able to tell you if you have to wean yourself off and exactly how to do it depending upon the medication. Your doctor will also be able to determine the risks of staying on the medication vs. going off of it now. Do not stop taking it on your own...I have had clients who stopped taking meds suddenly without their doctor's advice and some had bad reactions. Hope that helps!

my doctor told me to speak to my gyno and my gyno didn't know and told me to speak to a genetic counselor, that's why i'm torn. i thought a genetic counselor tells you what health conditions you should be aware of with our medical history.?

Rather than glean info off the internet, this is a case where you most DEFINITELY should be speaking to your Dr.
There are SOME SSRIs that are safe, mine (Lexipro) was not. I chose to wean myself off when we decided to TTC- and did it under a doctor's care.

Wow~ seems a little ridiculous that your Dr AND your GYN can't give you definite answers. I'm assuming your Dr. prescribing the meds is a general practioner and not a Psychiatrist? Perhaps you should contact a psychiatrist who can help determine your needs and appropriate treatment.

no he's a psychiatrist, he doesn't know the specifics he said he only knows certain trimesters are more crucial then others. lexapro is basically the only thing working right now for me, i also take klonopin but i don't know how much that helps.

Re: Medication and Pregnancy/TTC (x-post)
I was told Lexipro was not safe in pregnancy. My doctor offered to put me on another medicatin, but I chose to wean off slowly.
BTW~ Lexipro is a REALLY difficult drug to wean off of and MUST be done slowly and under a doctor's care.
GL in whatever you decide!

Re: Medication and Pregnancy/TTC (x-post)
I was on them for years (zoloft). I asked my DR. a few years ago about taking them while TTC and he told me I need to be off of them. So, with my DR, I slowly started weaning off of them a year ago. I weaned off in about 2 months and at first it was HORRIBLE!!! I had a ton of panic attacks for the first few months but it gradually got better! One year later I'm medication free and feeling great!!!
Give yourelf time because you don't want to be on the medication while pregnant but you don't want to have the stress of panic attacks while pregnat as well!!
FM if you ever need to chat
