Medicine recall...UPDATE

DD has a little bit of a cold...since the recall of all the infant meds, I cannot buy any type of decongestant to get rid of her runny nose. So....at 11 I know have to take her to the ped, so I can get a prescription for her. This is so annyoing Chat Icon

ETA: Ok..so DD only has a runny nose...she needed a decongestant. All of them were on the "voluntary recall", so I couldn't buy anything (Pedicare) over the counter. The doctor gave me a prescription for CERON which is an oral decongentant. She said that they have been flooded with phone calls and extra visits with people like us who would normally buy something over the counter. DD did not have a fever, cough or ear infection when we went to the doctor.

I've never used these medicine, because my doctor has always told me they were unsafe. I've just used saline spray. It's interesting that they're recalling them now.

Re: Medicine recall

you can use the saline drops and also the menthol vapor rub that you put on their chest to help open them up...
DD has gotten a few colds and you really cannot give them anything and cold medicines don't cure anything anyway- if anything, it's better to let them fight it out.

Hmmm, I just bought them a decongestant in Flroida on Saturday, when did this recall come about?

I only gave it to them once and left it in Florida and forgot about it.

After the death of several children, several studies were done and found that the risks were higher than the benefits of cold and medicine for children under 2. They concidered teh drugs/OTC to be an overdose for the young children. So, the FDA removed them from the market.

While I can understand that now we don't have anything and it's a pain, I am glad that I don't use something with the potential to be unsafe for my child.

It is not recalled forever. Just until they change the packaging and the labels. Some parents were giving their child too much.

Re: Medicine recall

I just spoke to my doctor about this. She said the reason there is a recall is that people were overdosing their children on the medicine. The children also had more than colds - pneumonia and parents were giving them cold medicine for it. She said that if I want to give Jake medicine to give him 1 teaspoon every 4 hours. Just watch your dosage.

Re: Medicine recall...UPDATE

my dd is 3 and i was giving her cold medicine for 3 years. I'm not saying you should but I think people abuse it and the dosage is an issue. They want their child to sleep during the night or if the baby is crying to much and they give them a little bit when its not necessary.

She was sick this week and I didn't know what to do so I took her to the ped. and they gave her antibiotics but normally i would have just given her something over the counter. I'm not sure if antiobiotics are any better you know.

They died because parents did not follow the directions on the label. Not because of the actual medicine.

I'm mad because instead of spending $5.99 on a box of pedicare decongestant at Walgreens...I had to take DD to the ped ($20 copay) and get a prescription filled ($10 copay).

This was a voluntary recall by the company because of the labels on the medicines...however, this was a PITA to make DD feel better.

True, but I guess it's better to be safe than sorry. JMO! Hope everyone is feeling better soon.
