Meeting the neighbors at a new home
So we moved into our house almost two weeks ago (in Great Neck). We haven't met any of the neighbors. I grew up on Long Island, but spent 10 years after college in New England and I think it has made me expect stuff that just doesn't happen here. In Massachusetts the neighbors came to say hello as soon as they saw us outside (some came while the moving truck was still there!) So, would I be silly to knock on my immediate neighbors doors to say hello? I think its weird not to know the people that I share a property line with, but don't want to scare them either...

Re: Meeting the neighbors at a new home
yea I totally understand where you are coming from- I grew up in Jersey and its so different than here- we live in a coop, so we knocked on our downstairs neighbor's door and introduced ourselves- we live above them and it felt weird not knowing who was there- the other neighbors say hello but basically dont bother to introduce themselves

Re: Meeting the neighbors at a new home
I was born and raised here on Long Island. The day we moved in with our moving truck out whole block((4 houses) came out to introduce themselves and welcome us. That Christmas I received a Christmas card from all of them as well. It all depends who you neighbors are.... Congratulations on your new home!

Re: Meeting the neighbors at a new home
Certain neighborhoods are more "friendly" than others in LI. Some towns have more young families looking to socialize than others. I dont know about where you live so I cant speak to it personally. But if you want to do it, go for it.

Re: Meeting the neighbors at a new home
We moved into our home in January and the first week of february. We didn't meet our neighbors until that April/May when we started to do outdoor work on the lawn, house, etc. They came over and introduced themselves and welcomed us. During the winter, people would wave, but it was too cold to do pleasantries.

Re: Meeting the neighbors at a new home
We met our neighbors at different times - seeing our immediate neighbors outside - our other neighbors on walks and such...
Around the holidays we went to our immediate neighbors on either side, and the two across the street from us with Entenmann's pies to be neighbor-ly.
I say - go for it - knock on their doors and introduce yourself.

Re: Meeting the neighbors at a new home
When I moved to FL 3 1/2 years ago not one neighbor came and said hi. No one offered help nothing. We thought ok very interesting. We only knew one neighbor because DH went up and said hi to him. Now we just moved back to Levittown 2 months ago and moved back in with my in law's and let me tell you when that Budget truck pulled everyone said " hi and if you need help let us know". It was a totally different scene.
It sounds like they think they are going to intrude or nervous meeting you so i would go for it and say hi. You got nothing to lose and you gain new friendships.

Re: Meeting the neighbors at a new home
We moved into our house 4 years ago. Two years after we moved in, the welcome lady of the neighborhood stopped by with a basket. I told her we've been her for 2 years already. Her response was because we're so young everyone thought we were renting. Rent or buy, it makes no difference. I guess DH and I should have introduced ourselves to the neighbhors. You should definately do it!! Don't miss the opportunity like we did.

Re: Meeting the neighbors at a new home
We moved into our new house 3 weeks ago today. We were really surprised because a lot of the neighbors said hello on the day we moved in. People saw the moving truck and waved, asked if we had kids, some people stopped while driving by and welcomed us to the neighborhood. On the otherhand, it took the guy directly across the street over a week to finally make eye contact and wave.
I think it's different on different blocks. My parents didn't have this experience when they moved to their new house 15 years ago, instead they received hate mail.

Re: Meeting the neighbors at a new home
When we were working on our house before we moved in - Neighbors came by to say hello. Some brought donuts and others brought a welcoming basket. We have great neighbors.
