I don't know about which brands are better, but I would just recommend that whichever you buy, they are lined (with cashmere, thinsulate, something! because otherwise, they are not too warm in my experience).

I got a few great pairs of leather gloves at the Coach outlet one year - but not until the end of winter.

I have bought friends leather gloves in the past from places like Macys and Kohl's - I just make sure that they're lined. Prices were good at these stores too.
