Mens Wedding Band Question
DH wants a new wedding band. The one he has now if white gold and gets scratched so easily. He likes the titanium and tungsten ones but we are getting mixed opinions from jewelers on what would happen if DH broke his finger. Most say those rings can't be cut off but one told us they can be cracked with pliers. I am going to do more searching online later, but if anyone knows of a scratch proof metal that can be cut off in emergencies please share!

Re: Mens Wedding Band Question
I am pretty sure that it is an 'urban myth' that you can't cut them off. If you google "Can a titanium ring be cut" all the websites say yes.
It's like the platinum vs. white gold debate, whatever YOU have is the better one Whichever one the jeweler is selling is the better one.

Re: Mens Wedding Band Question
here's a suggestion for the scrathing issue.... what about a textured / matte finish ring in gold or platinum? can't see scratches on something that's supposed to be 'scratchy' to start
If he's working with his hands a lot, and could conceivably be injured and need his ring cut off, I'd go for a standard gold band. without a doubt, it can EASILY be cut off.

Re: Mens Wedding Band Question
DH is an engineer and took a bunch of classes on different metals and stuff... his ring is titanium. he LOVES it because its so light weight and durable. his friend is an engineer AND an EMT and he also has a titanium ring... they both said that if it needed to be, the rings could be cut off....

Re: Mens Wedding Band Question
DH's original ring is titanium. I had to get him a new one (white gold) because he's lost weight and EVERY jeweler told me they cannot resize titanium.

His ring was a matte finish, but it looked soooo bad. Now it is shiny and we have to keep getting it polished.
The funny thing s he doesn't work with his hands alot, but he has broken his hand and fingers numerous time playing sports - even though he will remove his rings for sports he is still nervous about losing a finger.

Re: Mens Wedding Band Question
Thanks, I will pass those links on to him. The jewelers actually had the titanium ring he wanted, but didn't want to sell it to him

Re: Mens Wedding Band Question
My husband has a Titanium wedding band and he loves it. He finds it very comfortable because it is light and he doesn't have to worry about scratching it etc. If necessary it can be cut off the finger, however it is not easily sized. Based on the inexpensive price I don't think it is worth resizing anyway, but that is JMO.

Titanium can be cut off in case of an emergency. It cannot, however, be resized. My DH has a titanium ring and loves it.

Re: Mens Wedding Band Question
DH has a friend who is a jeweler and we heard the same thing, he told us, they don't make any $$ when they sell titanium, and that it can be cut off... Its a myth.

Re: Mens Wedding Band Question
Cool... DH is going to be so excited!
The reason I didn't think the jewelers were lying to us to sell us something more expensive was they didn't try to sell us anything. They just polished his old ring.

Re: Mens Wedding Band Question
I have a gold/white gold ring that is faceted, so you can't really scratch it. I've had it for 12 years, and it's been through a lot of abuse, but it still looks nice, even though the sharper edges are worn.
This isn't the ring, but it kind of gives an idea of what I'm talking about:

Re: Mens Wedding Band Question
The jeweler did show us one like that, but DH is very picky and wants one like this: This is what his used to look like in white gold but it just doesn't hold up.
DH is going to be working at a hospital tomorrow, so he said he is going to ask the ER about the rings.

Re: Mens Wedding Band Question
Not sure I want to tell DH that it's a myth... he LOVED the titanium ring he tried on at the jewler but got spooked when she told him it couldn't be cut off!
