mercury and autism

My DH and I recently have heard about mercury in vaccinations for children that they believe are causing autism! Has anyone heard about this? Chat Icon

Re: mercury and autism

Yup, it depends on whos argument you read though. There is no definitive proof. Although I am pretty sure one of the only childhood vaccines they give that MAY contain mercury is the MMR which is why it's such a hot topic to get it at 18 months when autism signs become apparent

Re: mercury and autism

yes...and my brother has MS and they aren't sure what causes that.
I am spacing my childrens shots apart drastically.
They also think too many too close together are a problem

Re: mercury and autism

My nephew has autism. I know a lot about it. Vaccines do NOT cause Autism. There is not one scientific study that shows any link.
You have to be VERY careful about what you read online.
When my brother finally understood that his son had autism he wanted to find a "reason"..something to blame. And I totally understand that. But when you put a lot of parents searching for a reason online you can often get a lot of theories that are unproven. Some parents give their children unsafe drugs to try to "cure" them or put them on weird, unhealthy diets and tell other parents that it saved their children.
There is a lot of guess-studies and misinformation all over the Web. Part of the rise of autism is the fact that years ago your child would be labeled "retarded" whereas now the doctors give a very specific name to the condition. We are more aware of the symptons to look for. Something is causing autism diagnosis to rise, but no one know why yet.

Do they still put mercury in vaccines?? It seems like there was a lot of debate about this a few years ago and I thought they stopped doing that. I want to vaccinate my child, but the shot of shooting him up with mercury is just insane. I guess I have to research this more...

Re: mercury and autism

I'm not saying that the vaccines cause it, it's the mercury in the shots and they say if you get many shots in one there is more mercury then getting a single dose of a shot. That's why they are saying mercury can cause autism.

Re: mercury and autism

You can get the shots without mecury in them, ask your doctor.

I chose to give the shots as the pediatrician suggests.. Many of my friends have broken them up though

I agree with Michele31, there is no proven research towards this..

Re: mercury and autism

Yes I have heard that too, shots with no mercury and that is what we plan on doing along with spreading them out.

Very well said!!!!

I am an autism professional, and work with people who are very involved in autism research, and at this point, there is nothing definitive pointing to the true causes of autism, which is frustrating, obviously, to people who want a reason now - what sounds better - autism MAY be caused by.... OR - Autism was definitely caused by.... more people will agree with the definitely because its a quicker answer....

I will tell you, the research is pointing towards genetics (once again - no one wants to think that their genes contributed to their child's disability!)

But - identical twins will both have autism, while there is a lesser percentage with fraternal twins. Usually fraternal twins, if both have autism, will manifest it differently. Siblings of chldren with autism have a higher risk of having autism.

Also - autism's signs manifest at key developmental periods - times when vaccines are given anyway. I know of parents who have delayed the vaccines so they can keep track of their child's development

This is a huge controversial topic, obviously, and one I will never discuss with a parent of a child who believes this caused their child's autism. I discuss treatment, because whever autism comes from, its not going to go away, successful lives....

I am pretty sure that the only vaccinations to contain mercury at this point is the Flu shot.

Re: mercury and autism

Found thison the CDC website:

What is thimerosal?

Thimerosal is a very effective preservative that has been used in some vaccines and other products since the 1930’s. Thimerosal contains approximately 49% ethylmercury. There is no evidence of harm caused by the low doses of thimerosal in vaccines, except for minor reactions like redness and swelling at the injection site. However, in July 1999 the Public Health Service (PHS) agencies, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and vaccine manufacturers agreed that thimerosal should be reduced or eliminated in vaccines as a precautionary measure. Today, of all routinely recommended licensed pediatric vaccines that are currently being manufactured for the U.S. market, only some influenza (flu) vaccines and tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine (given to children age 7 and older) contain thimerosal as a preservative; the remaining pediatric vaccines do not contain thimerosal as a preservative.

Re: mercury and autism

The guy who created thimerosal actually said that it should stop being used - at the time it was created, it was the only preservative available - but now, there are so many other ways to preserve vaccines without the mercury....

mercury is definitely not something we want in large doses in our body, as it is toxic, so it is a good precaution in general. I know some people who have had mercury poisoning....
