Mercy vs. South Nassau
Okay I need your help. I was wondering everyone's views on the two hospitals. I have had only two firends have babies and they were at LIJ and Winthrop. I get to choose either South Nassau or Mercy. If you have any opinions on the two hospitals please share them. I would appreciate it.

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
I switched practices but I was going to go to Mercy..when asked around I got a few "Oh really" that's a good hospital to deliever. I was annoyed but didn't like my Dr. so I switched and now go to Winthrop and when I say that the response is a lot different..oh that is a great hospital. My 3 cousins were all delievered at Mercy though and my Aunt thought the staff was great. Best of luck rough choice!

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
my doctor only delivers at south nassau. his exact words to me were "why would you choose a jalopi when you could have a cadillac?" whether or not that's true is opinion i guess but i was shocked he said that to me.
all i know is that the neonatal facilities at SN have been recently renovated and everyone has a private room. my only experience with mercy was when my aunt was hospitalized there---due to her treatment and the facilities, i knew that i personally would never give birth there. my grandfather died at SN after being hospitalized there for a long time and the family was very happy with them.
so i'll be a SN mom.
if i were you i would tour both places and make your own decision. good luck!

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
I delivered my daughter there almost 3 years ago and had an amazing experience. I cannot rave enough how wonderful everyone was. I'm due with baby #2 in April and have a different doctor this time around. My doctor only delivers at Winthrop, which I've heard great things about too, but I really wish I were going back to South Nassau. Anyone that I know that has delivered there has been very happy.
For what it's worth, I've had 3 friends deliver at Mercy and were not thrilled with their experiences.

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
I'd pick S.Nassau. I haven't heard much on the positive side of Mercy. I delivered both my sons at S.Nassau one before and one after renovations. Pre-renovations - I had a wonderful experience. My son was in NICU for 5 days and the care he got and we got was wonderful. Post-renovations - the hospital and rooms are terrific. All private and big. L&D was terrific. I just had issues with my post-delivery care. I felt the baby was dropped off and besides the basics no one came and talked to me or came to see if me and baby were ok - totally opposite of my first experience where the couldn't stop helping you and talking to you and tending to any need you had. I was kicked out early - since I delivered so close to mid-night and didn't get to my room until after 3am - they said I could have the extra day and then when it came time they basically pulled me out of the shower at 7am to tell me I needed to go home that day - a day earlier then the originally said which was bad for me - I could have used an extra day. To their defense, the place was packed - it was a busy few days. I know others who delivered there (a friend delivered there 2 weeks before me) and said they felt like they were in a spa and didn't want to go home. So maybe a caught a rough week.

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
I had a friend that delivered at Mercy and it was really nice. I've also had a friend deliver at South Nassau. I liked South Nassau but both are nice and smaller facilities which I like.
My insurance and OB are both affiliated with South Nassua so I son't have a choice, Mercy is not covered by my insurance.
I would go to either if I had to. Can you take a tour of each of them and see whichone you prefer??? That would be my suggestion.

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
I never delivered at Mercy but have delivered at South Nassau. It was an amazing experience.
I delivered my 1st at Winthrop and that was great. But South Nassau blew it away. Everyone has a single suite which was heaven. The entire faciility is brand new. The staff was amazing. Even the candy stripers were amazing and went above and bbeyond. I had a c-section so I was there 4 days. I want to give birth again just so I can go and stay another 4 days

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
My doctor only delivers at south nassau, so I checked them out after hearing that the maternity unit was recently updated, and I am very happy that I will deliver there. All the rooms are private suites, and you can see pics of them on the hospital's website too. My dad was there x-mas 1999 in the CCU and received excellent care.
I remember hearing not so great things about Mercy (in general, not maternity) from someone who worked there and left, but I can't remember who it was...I actually think it may have been Bluepixie. Laura, am I crazy, or was that you?

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
I delivered at Mercy. I actually had a good experience there and have no complaints. I was there for 9 days at 35 weeks and then went back at 40 weeks to deliver. The nurses were all great (except for one in delivery who kept yelling at me for not holding my breath till 10 and I would let it out in a sort of scream ). The post delivery was very good, a lactation consultant checked on me all the time.
BUT I've also heard great things about SN and I've heard the rooms are GREAT! I also now live 2 minutes from there so I will likely be going there the second time around.

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
I delivered at Mercy and will probably not for the next one. My Dr. will not deliver at South Nassau even though he can. He told me the his pick is Mercy def over South Nassau. And Winthrop over all 3.

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
I just took a hospital tour of South Nassau last night because that's where I'm planning on delivering. The new renovations look great. DH and I were impressed that all the rooms were private and the nurses we talked to were really nice. The only thing DH did not like is that he is not allowed to stay overnight in the postpartum room. However, he can stay there all day. The only time he can stay overnight is in the LD room. Aside from that, everything else looked good.
My OB used to deliver at Mercy as well as SN, but he stopped delivering at Mercy. He said the differences between the two were night and day and the facilities at SN were better. If I were you, I would call SN and sign up for a hospital tour. I think you'll find it helpful to see it first hand.

Re: Mercy vs. South Nassau
Mercy hands down for level of care. Dont confuse pretty decor for better facilities-Hospitals are a business just like anywhere else---South Nassau is great cosmetically due to renovations and the care is good too but its a level 2 hospital while Mercy is a Level 3. What this means is that heaven forbide the baby has any complications during or after delivery Mercy is better equiped with certain machines South Nassau does not have.
I had a choice of Mercy, SN and Winthrop and my high risk doc prefered delivering at Mercy for this reason. A pretty room cant help your baby-comfortable yes but after seeing full term babies in NICU I understood why he wanted me at Mercy, Winthrop was #1 but it was too far.
P.S here is the link for hospitals and the caliber of care they provide-HOSPITALS
