merrick - n. bellmore area/schools?
DH and I are thinking of putting an offer on a house we looked at today but we don't know much about the area so I'm looking for some feedback. It's located in Merrick but zoned to N. Bellmore schools. It's north of the southern state in between bellmore and merrick ave. Does anyone live in or know anything about that area and the SD? Please FM me if you'd rather not post it, I want to know the good and bad. TIA.

Re: merrick - n. bellmore area/schools?
n. bellmore is an elementary district.. overall the district is very good
for ms/hs it should be merrick schools-bellmore/merrick is a central hs district-i taught there last year as an intern
merrick ave ms is wonderful, and very home-like calhoun hs is amazing-i miss it every day as an employee..there are tons of programs for students, and the teachers are fantastic
yes, there are some problems, but wayyy less than you'll find at other schools (i've been at quite a few now because of leave replacements/subbing)..the students that get into trouble there are, for the most part, harmless

It's not zoned to either of the schools you mentioned. The elementary school is dinkelmeyer, MS is woodland and HS is mepham. Do you know anything about those?

I'm not far from there and we actually looked in that area when we were looking for a house (we ended up in Plainedge SD tho). The Merrick/Belmore SD is great. I would be 100% comfortable sending my kids there. You can get school info on the mlsli.com website....when you go to the website, you can click on the left side where it says school info.

that's odd that the ms is woodland, because that's east meadow school district-i actually went there and its a good school, but just doesn't really make sense..
usually if students go to mepham they go to grand ave ms, which is also very good..
zoning usually works that north/south bellmore go to grand ave, north/south merrick go to merrick ave
then for hs, north merrick goes to calhoun, north bellmore goes to mepham, and south merrick/south bellmore go to jfk
are you sure those are the schools they would go to?

I thought it was strange that we'd be zoned to woodland because it is in E. Meadow. I got the information on zillow.com so it's possible it's not accurate. I do know dinkelmeyer is the elementary school and mepham is the HS because I specifically remember the real estate agent saying that. I don't remember which MS she had said.

it would have to be grand ave then, not woodland..
i actually still live across the street from fayette elem., and because i live in em i had to go to barnum, which was much farther away..
i would double check on the schools

I grew up in Merrick and loved it. I didn't go to those schools but I think the district is great. Good luck!

Zillow just tells you which schools are geographically closest to the home. It does not tell you which school the home is zoned for.

Re: merrick - n. bellmore area/schools?
The entire Merrick-Bellmore SD has an excellent reputation. It's comparable to the other districts I know you were looking in. You have nothing to worry about.
You can call the district office with an address and find out exactly which schools the house is zoned for. If you want some in-depth info, check out www.greatschools.com. That will give you demographic information, test scores, % of college-bound students, etc.
eta: One of my colleagues did her student teaching there, DH's cousins went there, and I know someone teaching in Mepham now. They LOVE it.
