Re: Metformin
I am not on metformin. Just thought I would explain what it does, ....it's given out a lot for patients with pcos.
Metformin is a med that's used, for people who are insulin resistant. Basically, if you are insulin resistant....the cells are supposed to allow insulin in after you eat, however they end up blocking the insulin from entering. What happens if this occurs, is, the body then secretes more insulin..... that in return builds up fat cells. The fat cells store estrogen, and therefore can make it hard for a person to ovulate. Too much estrogen can prevent ovulation as well as too little.
The IGTT (insulin glucose tolerance test) helps determine insulin resistance...Many women have normal glucose levels however, that test can determine that their insulin resistance is elevated....
Met, is a med, that can help IR/pcos women, lose weight, ovulate, conceive, and prevent miscarriage.
Sometimes losing weight, on your own, by changing your diet, can do the same thing.

Re: Metformin
I was on Metformin for PCOS for a short time. Unfortunately it made me really sick and I was unable to take it. My ob/gyn put me on ovcon 35 birth control pills. They are a low dose BC. Now DH and I are just beginning to try to conceive, but with the PCOS we don't know how hard or easy it will be. We're keeping our fingers crossed!!!

Re: Metformin
I am on Met now - I started it back in Oct. We are going to start trying sometime between May and Aug - but I have PCOS and wanted to try to get things as regular as possible before really starting.
Met should help if you have insulin resistance. So far it hasn't helped much with my weight but I no longer get low blood sugar every day so in that respect it is helping.
It is also supposed to help you ovulate - I think it is working for me there but right now after going off the pill I am very irregular - but last time I took a break from the pill after two months with AF I then didn't get it again so after 4 months they put me back on... so I think maybe the met is helping in that aspect.
Also I used to get very bad ovarian cysts while on the pill - and I was afraid of getting them again when I stopped. The met can help with that as well.
Italia6973 mentioned that she got really sick from the met - that is not unusual I was really sick my first few weeks - now I have no reactions at all. Ask your dr if you can start it on a low dose and raise it as your body adjusts - this worked for me.
Feel free to FM me if you have any questions.
