Metformin... I feel so tired and moody!
So I started 1500mg of Metformin on Tuesday night. I'm not sure if it's because it's the end of the marking period at school and I have a ton of work or it's the constant work on the house but I feel like a slug.
Friday, I was so tired I barely knew my own name. I only got through my classes because I've been teaching for 13 years and I was on "auto-pilot". People at work told me I looked pale and worn out... ummmm, thanks!
I went to bed early on Friday night and slept for 9 hours. I spent all day yesterday on the couch, snoozing and took a 2 1/2 hour nap. Sooooo unlike me. I am usually a whirl-wind of activity... cleaning, cooking, doing stuff around the house. Oh, and I'm cranky because I'm so tired.
Is this a common side effect? I'm going in on Tuesday for my HSG test and I'm planning on mentioning it to the doctor.

I think I have heard that people are started at a lower dose and titrated up. MY DH is BIG guy and he only takes 1000mg daily. I think you probably need to lower the dose for a bit. Also it is a diabetes medication so if you are not eating enough your sugar levels could go too low whihc would account for the tiredness. Are you eating enough?

Oh Rose, you've never met me. As my father once said... "I'm not a cheap date" I like my food. I never not eat.
I will say that my appetite is less. Wednesday morning I was eating my cereal, wasn't hungry and I could barely eat it. I just didn't have the appetite for it.
I was wondering why I was put on a higher dosage but I think it might be because it is VERY difficult to get me to ovulate. It took 4 months on Clomid at 150 mg for 7 days
ETA: I think it might be due to the sudden drop in blood sugar levels. I think it's just my body getting used to it. (that's my moody face)

Re: Metformin... I feel so tired and moody!
yes, it makes me tired as well. But more so it does a number on my stomach. If you just started taking it I would start off on a low dosage, i'm still currently up to 1000 mgs a day and trying to bring myself up to 1500mg. I'm taking my time.
Also about the appetite, mine has changed A LOT! the foods i use to enjoy does not appeal to me anymore, just the mere thought of it makes me quizy. Maybe take the 1000 mgs until your body gets use to it. Hopefully it wouldn't make you feel so tired.

Re: Metformin... I feel so tired and moody!
I was told, 500mg the first week, then 1000mg the second and 1500 mg the third.. and if my body couldn't handle the higher dose then to stay at 1000mg.
Unfortunately, it hasn't changed my appetite...in fact it may be making me hungrier lol if that's possible. lol

Re: Metformin... I feel so tired and moody!
How long have you been on it? I have been on 1500mg for awhile now and all those yucky side effects are gone. I was tired, moody and had horrible stomach problems the first 4 weeks or so but they are all gone now.

Re: Metformin... I feel so tired and moody!
I don't have pcos just a slightly elevated insulin level. Metformin works with the insulin levels...however sometimes it's given to people who have high dhea

Re: Metformin... I feel so tired and moody!
Just bak on a Met protocal and started with 500 mg last night and UGH I feel awful this morning. However, it does get better. I have a pretty strong stomach and don't usually have side effects from drugs (besides weight gain)
I wish you Luck and I hope it gets better for you. In the end, my dr. hopes to have me on 2000 mg (yes, for PCOS) and I am not that big at all and sugar is ever so slightly over.......
