ANAHEIM – The Mets have fired manager Willie Randolph, pitching coach Rick Peterson and first base coach Tom Nieto, the team announced shortly after 3 a.m. Eastern time Tuesday.

Bench coach Jerry Manuel has been named the team's interim manager, while Ken Oberkfell, Dan Warthen and Luis Aguayo will join the staff.

The announcement came despite the Mets' 9-6 victory against the Angels hours earlier, which lifted the team's record to 34-35. Randolph's tenure as the organization's 18th manager ends with a 302-253 record, the second-highest winning percentage in franchise history, trailing only Davey Johnson.

The first African-American manager in New York's baseball history, Randolph was in his fourth season at the Mets' helm. He was due to make $2 million this season, and is still owed $2.25 million in 2009.

Manuel, 54, managed the White Sox from 1998-2003, and was named AL Manager of the Year in 2000.

Warthen, who was serving as Triple-A New Orleans' pitching coach, succeeds Peterson in that role at the major-league level. He rejoined the organization after spending the previous two seasons as the bullpen coach on Grady Little's Dodgers staff.

Oberkfell, a former major-league infielder, has managed the Mets' Triple-A affiliate the past four seasons. Aguayo was the Mets' field coordinator, overseeing minor-leaguers at the Port St. Lucie complex.

GM Omar Minaya, who let Randolph twist in the wind without a bona fide vote of confidence for the past month, will hold at press conference at the Angels' stadium at 5 p.m. EDT Tuesday. If the Mets continue to flounder, the scrutiny will undoubtedly shift to Minaya, who is signed through the 2009 season.

if i were a mets fan i would be SO embarassed. what a sh!tty way to fire the manager - let him win a game, do the after-game press conference, and then fire him at 3 in the morning. in ANAHEIM. so disgusting.

as my DH said "what a classless organization."

i actually wanted Randolph to get fired at first... but then changed my mind.. once they said Manuel would replace him, i just thought "how better can this get" and i really thought Peterson was a good pitcing coach.. now i am just unsure about the whole thing.. i just dont see the Mets getting too far this year. I think their season is done. Chat Icon

I just don't see any fire in this team and to fire Willie Randolph the way they did was cold.

It's just not right the way they did it.

i just dont get how Omar can say that it was the "staff's" fault.. i mean, its the players as well.. either they are hitting, and pitching is horrible.. or vice versa.. i do agree with Willie not using the bullpen correctly, but that was my only problem.. i really dont think this is the answer..
this was supposed to be "another year that they are frontrunners to win" Chat Icon and next year they will be dumping players , so they blew it once again Chat Icon

Completely 100% classless! Oh well, I guess it's Willie's fault that his closer can't get 3 outs in the 9th.

Before anyone accuses me of being a "typical Yankees fan", I think the way the Yankees fired Torre last year was just as bad and just as classless.

Wagner is not the problem here.. and has been GREAT for us before those 3 blown saves.. how is that Willie's fault? Wagner had those bad 3 games out of nowhere, nobody expected him out of all the bullpen to blow it

I agree...The manager always gets blamed. Ok yes Willie made mistakes in how he used the bullpen but is it his fault completely? No of course not. It's the players fault too.

I don't think getting rid of Willie is the answer either. How about focusing on the real problem...THE MIDDLE RELIEF PITCHING!!!!!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Mets Fire Randolph, Peterson and Nieto

I'm listening to WFAN and they just said that Willie didn't find out that he was fired until he returned to the team hotel after the game.

I wanted Willie fired because they definately needed a change, but not like this. Omar is such a weasel. I'm not going to shed any tears for Rick Peterson especially when he got Scott Kazmir out of New York for Victor Zambrano who he claimed he fix his problem in 10 minutes.

Just another cracker jack job by another New York team who doesn't know how to let people go with a little class. The Knicks did it to Don Cheney. The Yankees tried to do it to Joe Torre until he told them to go screw. Now the Mets do it to Willie Randolph.

I'm embarrassed to be a Met fan right now.

This is bad, VERY BAD. Chat Icon The players are going to have a tough time with this and their performance is going to suffer. I feel bad for the fans especially.

My jaw dropped when I heard Willie was let go after their win last night, and the manner in which it was done is even worse. They fly him out to Anaheim and do it there, that's disgraceful!!

another question is some people believe that Omar didnt want to fire him on Fathers day.. right before the road trip..

we all agreed that it was better to be fired that day than to fly cross country Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Mets Fire Randolph, Peterson and Nieto

I'm torn as to if this was the right decision

I certainly disagree with how it was done.

Petersen had to go - bullpen was awful

But I am torn on Willie

On the one hand, I see guys like Reyes and Wright half-a$$ing it out there. I see Damion Easley dropping fly balls. I see players making fundamental mistakes.

To me, Willie has no control over that.

But then I see him take Santana out after 7 innings of scoreless ball. Willie never even put him out in the 8th. I can understand taking him out if he had a couple of guys on base in the 8th - but he never had the chance. It wasn't like they had a monstrous lead - 4 runs is not a HUGE lead in this day and age.

So, I'm torn

I think his fate was sealed after the Padres swept them, but why did they wait that long and do it in the middle of a west coast trip. At that point, they had taken 2 of 3 from the Rangers and beat Anaheim. Still a long way from great - but why would they go through all of that to fly him out there to fire him at 3:30 in the morning and make him do the post-game press conference.

its just sad that all the focus is on HOW they fired him.. and i think the players might not react too well with that. just the reactions they all had when they heard the news... Chat Icon
they didnt even want to speak to the media. i hope it doesnt effect them.. i still think it was a BAD move. should have let him finish the year, its not all of his fault.

its funny because people like us are still trying to figure out WHEN they "knew" he would be let go..

- is it when they lost the 2nd game to Texas??
- did they have any intention of firing him before they left for Cali ?
- did SOMETHING happen in lasts night game that omar said "this is it" NO, the Mets WON last night, how could that even be a factor!! Heilman did his job, (that was the turning point of the game!!! AND they played one of the BEST teams in the league!!
