Michael Jackson’s Father Talks Record Label At BET Awards

Three days after his son Michael Jackson death, 80-year-old Joe Jackson hits the red carpet the 2009 BET Awards held at the Shrine Auditorium on Sunday (June 28) in Los Angeles.

The Jackson family patriarch arrived without tickets, but was seated in the front row next to the Rev. Al Sharpton.

"It has been really tough," said the elder Jackson. "Remember, we just lost the biggest superstar in the world. I just wish he could be here to celebrate himself. Sadly, he's not here, so I'm here to celebrate for him."



Towards the end of his interview with CNN, Joe took the opportunity to promote his new business venture, a record label. Watch the interview below! The record label talk starts around the 3:15 mark.

And here is the statement one of the family’s publicists read during the interview: “Our beloved son Michael Jackson loved you all. Michael’s children are our first priority. We will have further announcements to discuss our plans going forward. Until such time, however, we have the personal and legal authority to act, and solely Katherine and I have authority for our son and his children. We wish to handle his memory and legacy with dignity. The attorney for the Jacksons is L. Londell McMillan and no one has the authority to speak on behalf of the Jackson family at this time.”

I'm sure new artists will be flocking to a record label where the manager beats them if they take hit a wrong note or step.

I can't believe he would leave his kids to his parents.

Until the details of MJ's will is known who know what he would have wanted for his children. I personally think that until it does come out, the kids should be with their grandparents.

What Joe Jackson did to his children was horrible and I do not condone any kind of abuse, but maybe he's not the same man he was when he was managing the group. Everyone is so quick to judge, but who knows what kind of peace has been made between he and his children. The family has not been in the media recently, so who knows what the family dynamics has been.

My grandfather used to beat my uncles with this leather strap that had 3 strips at the end. When I used to hear the stories my cousins and I were shocked bc we never saw him get angry enough to beat anyone. He NEVER laid a hand or raised his voice on any of his grandchildren. My grandfather was no Joe Jackson, but I do believe that people can change and I don't necessarily believe that history repeats itself. JMO

I think its DISGUSTING that he had to stand there and walk the red carpet at the awards and promote himself. He makes me sick.

Janet Jackson was there too--but you know what? She did NOT walk the red carpet and only appeared on stage as a representative to her family to speak a few words before the tribute to MJ.

Why couldn't Joe Jackson just appear at the awards to see the tribute and what not and avoid all the cameras and the paparazzi and interviewers? To me, its because he loves the spot light and will take ANY opportunity to sell himself or his interests, even the death of his son.

Joe Jackson sounds just like his good buddy Al Sharpton - a greedy opportunist who exploits others to make a buck.
