Microchipping your pet
This is something for all pet owners to consider. If your beloved pet gets out and makes it to a shelter or vet, they can scan your put and pull up all your info. All 3 of my dogs have it, and we were in the room with Denver when we got it - he yelped and that was the end of it, no lasting pain. Something to consider:

Re: Microchipping your pet
We got it for Scout immediately.
But also keep a collar on your dog with his name, and a contact phone number so anyone who finds him can get in touch with you easily!! Always good to have a backup!

Re: Microchipping your pet
My vet opted to do it during spaying/neutering so that they would not be subjected to any discomfort. But it surely can be done when awake too if need be.

Our vet doesn't do it, but I contacted North Shore Animal League and they charge $30 for the mircrochipping.

Re: Microchipping your pet
I think microchipping is a must these days. We have a beagle and they are runners so it was VERY important to us to have her microchipped.
She also wears a collar at all times with a tag with our phone number on it, a tag with the vet's phone number on it and her NYC registration (which is current even though we moved out of the city).

Re: Microchipping your pet
Misty is microchipped and she has tags with her rabies vaccine (which they can trace back to the vet), her name - address and phone here and her name-address and phone in CT. This way, she can be returned wherever we are.
Thankfully, she is not a runner in that sense though.

Re: Microchipping your pet
I have it on both my kitties. It is a law here. You cannot adopt a cat or dog here from a shelter/foster care/breeder without it being microchipped.

You do have to register the chips. I'm not sure if you knew that or not, I didn't and registered Misty about six months after we got her.

And if you ever move or change your phone number, be sure to update!

Re: Microchipping your pet
The rescue org I got Bonnie from did it for free. The chip is actually registered to THEM, but they have our contact info.

Re: Microchipping your pet
When we got Peanut we paid an extra like $20 to have the microchip put in. So worth them oney!
She also wears a collar with her name, our name, address, and phone number. Got that at Petco too, I can't remember how much it was but I know it was cheap!

Re: Microchipping your pet
We were just talking to our vet about doing this for our cat. He said it's a good idea to do it, but we got kind of scared b/c it sounds painful - and the possibility of infection. Those of you who have had it done, were your pets knocked out? He mentioned they do that somtimes too. Our cat is 100% indoor, so part of me says why bother, BUT- I do recognize one day she could get out so we'd feel better knowing she had it but I hate to put her through that.

Re: Microchipping your pet
When Bonnie had it done it was super quick. They just brought her to the back room (to spare us the worry, even though theres nothing to worry about really) and brought her back out within a few minutes. She just had a tiny bit of blood on her fur, but the lady said she was so good about it.
