Middle School Cyber Bullying

I work in a school and recently a parent just called me with a concern about Cyber Bullying. Her daughter has been the victing of a lot of teasing on Facebook and the mother is concerned that this will eventually carry over into school.

The parent asked me for tips to help her monitor the situation at home and I did my best to help her, however, I have never dealt with cyber-bullying before in my school nor am I a parent.

Any tips or advice I can share with this mother would be greatly appreciated.

How are they bullying her on FB? Doesn't she have it set up for only friends? Other people shouldn't be able to leave comments or anything. Chat Icon

The bullies are 3 girls in her class. I should mention that only the girl that is being bullied is a student in my school - she is a special education student in an inclusion classroom. The 3 girls are general education students in the middle school.

It began with the 3 girls leaving mean comments on her Facebook wall. When the mother found out, she had her daughter delete these girls from her friends list. However, these girls are now posting messages about her on their own pages and other students from the school are jumping on the bandwagon.

I have tried to contact the principal of the middle school however, I do not think the school conduct policy includes cyber bullying.

Re: Middle School Cyber Bullying

It was a huge problem in my school, with a group set up to insult and post threatening comments about one student. When the principal found out about it, all of the moderators of this group had a week's suspension, and all of the kids who made posts had 1 day in-house suspensions. Unfortunately, these kids saw the suspensions as a being "cool", and unfortunately their parents didn't do much - I felt they should have cancelled their kids' facebook suspensions. But I would bring it to the principal's attention of the other school, maybe he/she will deal with this behavior, or at the very least contact parents.

Thanks! I'm glad to see that the school did something - even though it sticks that it wasn't as effective as it could have been. Was it successful in stopping the bullying?

I left a message for that school's assistant principal and I'm waiting for her to get back to me.

Re: Middle School Cyber Bullying

Contact the School District - if there's ANY spillover at school or on the school's computers, if put on notice that she believes they are harassing her on the basis of her disability, the School HAS to take action. And if the School doesn't act, she can file a complaint with the U.S. Dept. of Education, Office for Civil Rights:

OCR

It might be worth it just to call the NY office and ask what her rights are - they have plenty of resources to put her in the right direction, and provide some good advice.

Im not sure what's going on now, because this all happened just before I left on maternity leave. But I know this poor kid was bullied so much before the facebook stuff started, I doubt it has gotten much better. I feel for the kid.

Re: Middle School Cyber Bullying

I really wish parents would get involved more. As a parent, I would be so upset to find out my child was bullying someone. In person or online.

I know this isnt a cure-all, but children under 18 are only supposed to be on Facebook if they are in HS or college - the profiles can be reported and deleted. One less outlet for these kids to harass each other through.

Children under 13. Children under 13 years old are not permitted access to Facebook. In addition, parents of children 13 years and older should consider whether their child should be supervised while using Facebook.

Re: Middle School Cyber Bullying

The school can't do much if it's not happening in school or on school computers. This is a police matter. The mother needs to print out all examples of bullying before they delete comments and contact the police ASAP. I'll bet if the police make a phone call to the parents of the other girls, it will scare them $hitless.

Nope, I just read the rules. Children 13-18 are only allowed on FB if they are enrolled in HS or college.

But if you're between 13+ & in secondary school (defined meaning middle school, high school), you can use it.

To the OP:
I would contact the principal of the school. I would also advise the parent to contact the parent of the children directly. I'd ban my child from a computer over cyberbullying.
