Middle school grades
If you have a child in 6th grade or above that has always gotten 3s and 4s on reports cards in elementary school what average do you expect them to have?
Also what average should they have before you take away privileges like ipad or social media?
The child is above average intelligence but not always motivated and/or loses confidence.

Re: Middle school grades
I have a 6th grader. I expect 90s or better in all subjects except ELA, which I expect 80s or better (it's his worst, most hated subject.) he's very bright, but unmotivated and lazy.
His grades get posted on the parent portal as they come in, and I yank privileges as necessary. He loses his phone and electronics as consequences for poor grades. He's learning to be motivated

Re: Middle school grades
I have a 6th grader. I "expect" that his average be above 80. However, I'm not a grade-punisher. If he's struggling, he goes for extra help and we have a tutor we call as needed (before big tests).
I was grounded on and off throughout my entire junior high school years for my grades. I had a very hard time in school, no amount of "punishing" made me understand what I struggled with. Being grounded and having privileges taken away did nothing to motivate me. In fact, it had the opposite affect as I was miserable and didn't care anymore. I finally had a teacher in 9th grade who realized I was not lazy, but struggling. Unfortunately, my mother just thought I was being "spiteful".

Middle school grades
I have a sixth grader who did mostly 3's in elementary school. He has ADHD so he struggles in some subjects. I expect over an 80, and would really prefer over an 85. Like the above poster, though, I will not punish for grades as long as I see EFFORT being put in. We will go the tutor route, or extra help after school. I don't really believe in punishing for grades unless its out of sheer laziness.

Middle school grades
I always toldy daughter I expected 80's and above in all subjects for report cards. I knew that she could pull that off with minimal effort. There was once she had a 78 in math, but I knew she was having trouble that semester. She had gone to extra help and it just wasn't sinking in. She got a pass for that.
Any failing grade throughout the semester has consequences immediately. One good thing about parent portal,
