Migraine relief - without aspirin
So I'm having my first major migrane since finding out I'm allergic to aspirin and Advil. I know the Excederin Migrane that will usually kick this has aspirin in it so I'm out of luck.
The 18 extra strength tylenols that I've taken thruout the day just aren't cutting it - it's been over 24 hours now since this migraine started.
I've done the extra hydration, caffiene, cold pack, eat more, sleep, etc, but nothing is doing it. (Obviously I've now moved on to insomnia...)
Anyone have any suggestions? I dont know what to do anymore but cry.
I'm thinking if I'm still like this tomorrow I may need to goto a clinic or hold out to monday to visit the regular doc to hopefully find out there is some migrane drug that doesnt contain aspirin.
Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

can you take advil? I find the liqui-gel kind works pretty well sometimes.
I hope you feel better

Re: Migraine relief - without aspirin
Thanks Christine.
I think I can't take Advil either, I'm not sure so I'd rather not risk it.
The last time I took advil I had heartburn like chest pains.. I am not sure if it was a coincidence or due to taking the Advil. It freaked me out and I'm scared to take it again.
It didnt give me the same issues as aspirin does - runny nose, sneezing and asthma attacks.
I finally gave in and took more tylenol - in the form of Nyquil and fell asleep at 3AM, and was up again at 8. I still feel it there a little bit; hopefully it will stay this way or go away totally.

Re: Migraine relief - without aspirin
I have suffered from Migraines for 25 years.
I sugget you go to see a neurologist. I don't see regular dr. at this point.
Have you had a brain MRI recently? You may want to check.
None of the OTC medicine does anything for me. So I never take them. Taking them will actually create more problems and your migraines will come back more and more frequently and more and more painful.

Thanks for the input. I think I will start with my regular doctor, at least as a first step. I have had a head MRI in the past year, as I went in for sinus reduction surgery.
I don't get them often - maybe once every 4-5 months. Usually Excederine Migraine will give me relief, but this time was the first that I can't take it due to the aspirin. I still have a small headache lingering, and I should goto the doctor now and get a script for something before I have a doozey again.... but me being me and putting it off, I'll probably won't goto the doctor and then in 4 months be crying again that I put it off... I hate the doctor.

I do better with a heated "bed buddy" than a cold pack. I had a patient who swore sniffing peppermint oil helped her. I did see"Peppermint Migraine Salve" at Ulta or The Body Shoppe once.

Re: Migraine relief - without aspirin
I have been getting migraines since I was in junior high. The only good thing is in the beginning I got them frequently but as I got older I would get them once or twice a year. I always get symptoms before the headache and when I get them I usually take advil cold and sinus. Now since Christmas I have gotten about 5 migraines which is very unusual for me and it scared me. I don't know if it is the weather or what. I took the advil and didn't get the headache but I usually get a tiny headache where the migraine would be. You said that you can't take advil. My friend takes prescription pills for her migraines and they work for her if she doesn't wait to take it. I would go see a doctor and she what they say. I think that is always the safe way to go. I was about to go to one because like you I did everything also. Kept myself hydrated, slept, caffeine. You name it. I hope you feel better and you get an answer.

Re: Migraine relief - without aspirin
Nasal irrigation might work too. It does for me but most of the time my migraines start out as sinus headaches. It's worth a try.

Re: Migraine relief - without aspirin
Thanks everyone.
I do nasal irrigation daily with my allergies and sinus issues.
I have peppermint tea, I will try that next time around and I plan on giving the doctor a call tomorrow to set up an appointment so I can be prepared for my next migraine.

Re: Migraine relief - without aspirin
I get Cluster Migraines which are unbearable. I take Imitrex shots for them.
There is a new product on the market called Sinus Buster. It gives me instant relief.

Re: Migraine relief - without aspirin
My mother suffers with these her whole life. I would seriously make an appt with a neurologist b/c 18 tylenols is way too many pills.
My mom takes imitrex and it helps her greatly. as soon as she feels one coming on, she takes it and most times it knocks it right out.
Please...go see a dr. theres lots of treatment now a days for mirgraines. They are so painful...sorry you are dealing with this.
