This is going to royally piss off the Democrats since there was really no other Republican qualified to win.
Speaking of Republican, didn't Bloomberg drop his Republican status?
If he did, don't be surprised if he picks that back up now that more political gain is possible.

I am happy about it.
People can still vote for whomever they choose. But who better to run the city during this economic crisis than someone with much experience? He has my vote.

all I can find is that the council rejected the proposal to let voters decide whether to change city term-limit law. Is that what you saw? I can't find anything about bloomberg being allowed to run for a 3rd term? Maybe b/c it just happened?

I really like Mike too but I wish they let the voters decide this rather than the city council.

I'm very happy about this. Term limits for mayors never really made sense to me anyway. I know this is just a "one shot deal" and term limits will return after Bloomberg runs again, but what happens if down the line NYC has another awesome mayor and we want to keep him for more than 2 terms?

Eh, I don't know how I feel about it.
Mayor Giuliani couldn't have his limit extended immediately following 9/11.
The whole backroom deal seems shady to me.
I do like a lot of things about Bloomberg and his "mayoring."
I like that he brings art into the public eye. I like that he really cares about the health of all NYers (trans fat ban, smoking ban etc.)
As a teacher, I abhor what he and Klein have done to the school system--and I know that I haven't even felt its effect as badly as others!
I also feel a little badly for the homeowners who keep having their property taxes and water prices jacked up.
I'm torn.

 totally agree. he didn't want this to happen when giuliani was trying to do it.
(eta - not sure if that's what you meant, but that's what i was thinking!)
i feel sad for the nyc schools if he stays in office.

I may be remembering this wrong; but I thought Giuliani didnt want to RUN again; he just wanted to extend the term he was already in or no??
If the people vote for him and want him; isnt that what matters??

That is such BS! The voters of NY elected to have term limits. If he wants a third term so badly since he thinks he's the only person capable of being mayor, then it should go back to the voters. If the voters of NY decide to do away with term limits, by all means run again. I don't like that this was a city coucil vote.

City voters have TWICE rejected extension of term limits. While I like Bloomy and all, the way this was done is totally OFFENSIVE to me.
The City Council just steamrolled this one through (with lots of incentives, especially for Christine Quinn, who gets on my very last nerve).
I believe that ultimately this could really work AGAINST Mikey B at election time, NYCers don't like having stuff shoved down our throats, espcially on the heels of our federal govt's actions lately...

yes giuliani only wanted to extend his term not run again - because of the circumstances at the time. you are right.
