Milk supply questions - please help (sorry so long).
This past week we had to travel to NY (we live in FL now) due to a death in the family and we brought our DS who is 6 weeks old. I am EBFing, but for the past 4 days I had been giving DS formula once or twice a day because we were driving around a lot and even if I BF before we left he would get hungry in the car so I would give him a bottle since i couldn't take him out of his carseat.
Now that we're back I feel like my milk supply has diminished and he is not getting enough and I still have to supplement with an ounce or two of formula for each feeding.
Can I get my milk supply back?? I am so upset! I was pumping a little bit before this happened and was getting only about an ounce or two per session even when I was double pumping. I've been eating otameal every day but I don't think that is working. What about fenugreek? Did that work for anyone?

DD is 3.5 months & just recently my milk supply is decreasing I started taking fenugreek & do notice an increase in my supply & have to get back to eating oatmeal & drinking lots of water. Your supply will definitely come back, don't give up.

Cut out the formula feeding and start nursing instead. Try drinking Mother's Milk tea, Stop and Shop has it.

If you can, spend a couple days with DC and just nurse. You body will catch up in 2-4 days. You can also try pumping after feeding to boost supply. You won't get much but in a few days your body will respond just like a nursing vacation...
Sorry for you loss

Its supply and demand. The more you nurse your DS the more your body will produce. If you still feel that he needs some formula nurse him before you give him a bottle.

Thanks! That's what I've been doing, so hopefully that will help.

ITA with greeneyes. The problem with supplementing is your body never knows how much milk to produce. If you supplement with 4 oz, that's 4oz less that your body will produce.
You'll have to bite the bullet for a day or two and deal with your baby nursing constantly in order to get your supply to where it needs to be.
I hate to be one of those militant BFing moms, but if you TRULY want to EBF (whether by boob or by pumped bottle) you must stop supplementing with formula.
BTW: Your breasts are never truly empty- they are constantly producing milk. As long as DC is suckling, he is getting milk.

Thanks. Maybe I'll lock myself in the bedroom this weekend and just nurse. Right now I'm having trouble keeping DS latched on - that's why I'm thinking that he's not getting enough.

I agree with everyone else. Try to cut out the formula & just nurse as much as you can. If he keeps nursing he will get milk & he will increase your supply. It sounds like he may be going through a growth spurt as well.
ETA: I just re-read that he is 6 weeks old. That is a common growth spurt age. The best thing to do is to let him nurse as much as possible. He may seem fussy, but that's totally normal. The best thing for your is to stop the formula.
Good luck!

Thats not necessaruly a sign that he's not getting enough. The bottle is much easier to eat from so right now he wants it.
When my DD was just born she had severa jaundice, the pediatrician told us to formula feed her until her levels wen down. I pumped to keep my supply up and when it was time to breastfeed again she didn't want to. I had to work with her for at least a week to get her to latch on again. After that we had no problems and I nursed her until she was 1.
