Miller Place, Mt. Sinai, The Setaukets? Info please
Can anyone tell me whatever they can, good and bad, about these areas? Anything at all would be appreciated.
We want at least half an acre, great schools, family oriented neighborhoods with good property values, well kept neighborhoods, etc.
We have a good budget to work with.
As for the Setaukets, can you tell me the differences b/w them?

My Sister is in Miller Place. They have a HUGE gorgeous house. High taxes but they say is worth it. SD is phenomenal. All my Neice and Nephews do very well in school. I visit them a lot and the area is nice. They absolutely love their life out there.
If you want half an acre, good schools, nice neighborhoods- Miller Place will offer that. You are just going to PAY. My Sister's taxes are 18K a year- I believe. She has a huge house with almost 4 acres.

You can't go wrong with any of those places.
Like the OP said, Miller Place's taxes are a little high, as are Mt. Sinai's.
I live in Setauket (East). Setauket & East Setauket have the same zip code. not sure why they are even two separate towns. most of the houses here are on at least .33 acres. we have a half. The taxes are lower than MP & MT S. Older homes too.
South Setauket is Centereach in 3VLG schools. It is south of 347. The lots are smaller though - although there is a development with newer, larger houses.

Miller Place and Mt. Sinai have much higher taxes, and IMO you don't get as much for the money as you would in Setauket. They don't even have a public library.
South Setauket is really glorified Centereach. East Setauket and Setauket are both wonderful, really great places to live. I would definitely recommend Three Village schools over Mt. Sinai and Miller Place. They have excellent extracurriculars, sports, etc.
If you have a good budget, I would definitely recommend Port Jeff Village. The schools are as highly ranked as Half Hollow Hills and Cold Spring Harbor. The taxes are also much lower than surrounding areas.

Re: Miller Place, Mt. Sinai, The Setaukets? Info please
I'm in E. Setauket.
Our taxes are very high - even with Star, and we live in what I consider an average neighborhood. BUT we have a good school district (three village) and a wonderful library (Emma S. Clark) with a lot of great programs all year long for all age groups.
My sister is in Mt. Sinai - Good school district - Her taxes are a little lower (with property size and house being equal) - But doesn't have a public library. She can choose between Comsewogue Public library and I think the Miller Place library.
edited to add name of library

I live close to Miller Place. You won't have a problem w/ shopping, there are stores all up and down 347. There is a nice Stop n Shop there in a strip mall. Target is in East Setauket, there is a Kohls in Rocky Point, and a Kohls in Setauket. You are close to Cedar Beach and many parks w/ great playgrounds.
The choice of libraries are Comsewogue and Port Jeff. Comsewogue is my library and it's AWFUL as far as programs/rules go, so I would pick Port Jeff if you do move to the area.

See, I belong to Comsewogue and we think it's better than Emma Clark - better selection of movies/music and there are tons of programs available - my DH said they're better than what he had as a child/teenager at Emma Clark.

You are honestly the first person I have heard say they like that library. They have a lot of materials, but their policies are awful. They have no drop box. The registration for programs is screwy, you have to go back like 3 times, they don't do it all the same day. No online registration. If you don't bring your library card, they won't look you up with just your ID. You can't renew your materials unless you actually bring the materials into the library. The staff is extremely rude. They have one toy in the childrens section. They have stairs that go down in the childrens section with no gate.
I've had so many problems there. I came from Middle Country library which is an EXCELLENT library so this one was VERY dissapointing.

I grew up in Miller Place. I absolutely love it there and hope to move back eventually.
The schools are wonderful, as another poster pointed out, there has been A LOT of development in the past 5 years.
And I agree to go to Port Jeff Library, and it never was a problem when I was a kid.

I live in Miller Place...I have for pretty much my whole life. Our taxes are quite high for the type of house we have and for the location of the house. It's a nice quaint area. IMO the SD isn't all it's cracked up to be...but I have nothing to compare it to.

Re: Miller Place, Mt. Sinai, The Setaukets? Info please
We are currently in contract on a house in S. Setauket. It shares the same zip code with Centereach, but it's in 3 Village, which was important to us. We love our area and can't wait to move in.
Any of the areas you listed are great, and you can't go wrong. No cons to any of them.

There are lots of shopping! I actually really like that I can have a choice of different stores. Sometimes I shop at stop & shop in Miller Place and sometimes I go to Waldbuams in Rocky Point. I don't think there are any areas to avoid at all. One thing I have to say about my area is that every house is different and everyone takes care of their homes. Which was a big selling point to us. Really, all of the towns you listed are some of the best in the area. Good Luck.

Maybe it's because I grew up with a librarian as a mother - I understand the issues Libraries deal with. However, I renew my materials all the time online without any issues.
