MINI-ME IN REHAB
AUSTIN POWERS star VERNE TROYER’s long-running battle with alcohol abuse has landed him back in a rehab facility.
The small star recently checked himself into a treatment centre near his Michigan hometown for 12 days after suffering a relapse.
His manager, ELENA FONDACARO, confirms to American publication National Enquirer, "Verne was in rehab and now he’s in outpatient therapy.
"Alcoholism is an illness that comes and goes - and Verne realised he was slipping. He decided to go back to rehab because he’s determined to maintain his sobriety." In October 2002 the 38-year-old nearly died of alcohol poisoning after being distraught following a break-up with GENEVIEVE GALLEN, a busty blonde who was his bride for two months.
Fondacaro adds, "He’ll be back in Los Angeles to resume work by mid-January (07). He’s determined to stay sober."

hmm, how is alcoholism an illness??
I always though it was inability to control yourself around alcohol...
They are making it sound like cancer... I guess with all the cases of that "illness" in Hollywood something had to be done to make all the alcoholics sounds like poor innocent victims rather than substance abusers...

Not to start a debate on here which has happened before, but having many family members who are truely alcoholic I've done a lot of research on the topic.
True alcoholism is viewed by many in the medical community as a disease or illness. A true alcoholic can not function without alcohol in their system. It can never be overcome, just managed. It mainly affects men, but can be passed down to women.
Many people who don't control themselves around alcohol call themselves alcoholic, but really aren't.

It IS a disease. Occasional alcohol abuse is one thing.
Alcoholism is another thing entirely.

Much like a drug-addict. It is an addiction that people get themselves into. It isn't something that just happens to them... So, I still don't see how it is an illness...
None the less, it is very sad when people and expecially their innocent family members are affected by it!

None the less, it is very sad when people and expecially their innocent family members are affected by it!
We're going to have to agree to disagree. True alcoholism is not a choice, there are many studies that prove it's a heritary trait that is passed along male family lines. My dad and his dad and all of my dad's brothers have been medically diagnosed as alcoholic. I didn't believe my dad myself until I did extensive research for a paper in college, so I can understand why you feel that way.

very much so. the predisposition is to have an addictive personality...the specific vice is a learned thing.
it is a mental illness. researching and knowing facts is a good thing.

I agree--people are predisposed to alcoholism. I believe there are cases of biological siblings who've lived entirely separate lives, who later learned that both have had troubles with alcoholism. It's not proof but it is quite interesting.
Even with non-alcoholics, I truly believe that some people's bodies tell them when to stop before they get alcohol posoning, and some people's bodies just don't send their brains that message.

The difference is that some people can casually do drugs / drink socially...and others cannot. When they cannot, it becomes an addiction.
