Missed abortions
Does anyone know anything more about this. The statistics or anything. my friend had one a coupe of years ago and it was the scariest saddest thing ever. She went for her 12 week sono and there was no heartbeat. The baby had died around 8 weeks and they had to do emergency surgery. She had no symptoms or anything. And of course suffering from the paranoia that I suffer from I am so afraid of this. Then I read that when the babies measure small that can be a sign of something wrong and I measured like a week behind where I should really have been. What do you think? Should I be concerned?

Re: Missed abortions
I don't know anything about this, but it is normal to worry while pg, but try to relax and enjoy or you will drive yourself bonkers!

the best thing you can do is not stress about this!!! If your baby measured a week behind maybe you ovulated later than you thought - that has nothing to do with having a missed miscarriage

Re: Missed abortions
That is just about what happened to me, but it had nothing to do with being a week behind, etc. I was 101/2 weeks when I found out the baby stopped growing about a week or so before. The only "sign" I had was the loss of the nausea and breast soreness that I had for the 5 weeks or so before. I had to have an emergency D&C. My doctor said it was just a normal miscarriage (they call them all missed abortions). There was probably something genetically wrong with the baby and it naturally doesn't survive. It had nothing to do with the dates ( the sono also put me about 3-4 days behind from what I thought I should have been). I have learne from this, though, and I can't do anything about it and if it happens again, I will deal with it again. I don't want to stress out too much because that is unhealthy. Try to block the bad from your thoughts!

Re: Missed abortions
I also had a missed abortion, but unlike gpsyeyes, I did not lose symptoms. I felt pregnant and went to my 12 week sono and saw that the baby had no heartbeat. Unfortunately these things happen and there is no warning, but that doesnt mean worrying will change the outcome or going for an extra sono. You just have to go along for the ride of being pg. Also just to let you know I was measuring a day ahead....so dont worry about measuring behind. I hope I didnt freak you out but I just dont like when people say if you m/c you will know...cause I didnt.

Re: Missed abortions
Okay, WHY did I open this thread???
I know it's not your intent to freak us out, you are just trying to give us information, but I'm totally freaked out now!!
I thought once you saw the heartbeat you were in the clear. I didn't realized it could just stop and you might not even know it.

Re: Missed abortions
This wasn't meant to upset anyone - just to inform - I hope it didn't, but yes, after you see a heartbeat, the baby can stop growing. I saw mine at a 6 weeks and then nothing at 10 1/2 when I went to the hospital after some slight bleeding and cramping one night. It is not like it is going to happen to most people, in fact, from what I read, miscarriages, by percentage are not that common. Most pregnancies go full term.

I was asking myself the same thing. But I think it is important to have the facts.

Re: Missed abortions
This is what I had read:
"Miscarriage statistics can be dramatic. Miscarriage reportedly occurs in 20 percent of all pregnancies. However, according to some sources, this may be an inaccurate number. Many women, before realizing a life has begun forming within them, may miscarry without knowing it-assuming their miscarriage is merely a heavier period. Therefore, the miscarriage rate may be closer to 40 or 50 percent. Of the number of women who miscarry, 20 percent will suffer recurring miscarriages."
I read things like this a lot after I had a m/c. It reassured me since I don't think it is nearly the same when you didn't know you were pregnant, so the numbers are lower.
