Missing 3-4 days of K for vacation
Weep panning a trip in the fall that would mean that our DC would miss a few days of kindergarten...in the October time frame. How big of a deal is it that she misses school for a few days?

Is it the end of the world? No. Would I make it a habit? No. Chances are the teacher won't give you work ahead of time but will be able to tell you when they will be working on. Then I would head to B&N and get a workbook and have her do pages on the plane and a few every day just to keep concepts fresh. This way, she'll be up to speed.
Also, tell the teacher ahead of time and you might have to submit documentation of the flight so her absence won't raise red flags.

Re: Missing 3-4 days of K for vacation
Well I swore I wouldn't pull the kids for trips. But in our district people pull all the time in lower grades. My kids tell me the kids in their class miss a day or two for skiing, GWL, Hershey, and a week for Disney, Atlantis, Aruba. We let our teachers know. They provide us with the work they missed or give the kids a few handouts. Some will ask your child just to keep a short journal and write 3-4 sentences a day and add pictures that they read to their class. In K they don't miss much. You can certainly play some math games and read with them a few minutes daily.

Not a big deal and wouldn't think twice. Like Lillykat said kids in our district also miss all the time for Vacation even in second grade. October in kindergarten is pretty much a breeze for most kids so I wouldn't give it a second thought

I will because it is hard for me to schedule vacation during school "peak off" times.

Re: Missing 3-4 days of K for vacation
We just got back from a trip where we pulled our two kids out of school for 4 days- kindergarten and 3rd grade. Both teachers sent homework and we did it even though to be honest it was a pain to get it done while we were away. I actually got my kindergartener to finish up his this weekend and sent it in today.
You would be surprised how much they are learning in kindergarten these days so you may have to do catch up homework when you return.
I would still take your child out though if it works better for you.

Missing 3-4 days of K for vacation
We took my son out of K last year for 5 days and the teacher DID give us the work that he was going to miss. So, he worked on it a little bit each night in the hotel.
I probably wouldn't do it past 3rd grade, but K is fine in my opinion.

In K, I wouldn't even bat an eye.
We did it every year until my daughter was in 7th grade. Then we stopped because the make up work was just too much, plus regents exams start in eighth and we didn't want her to miss anything that might affect her exam grade.

Re: Missing 3-4 days of K for vacation
Did that with DS to go away to Aruba last month. Let the teachers know at conferences in January and then an email reminder the week before. It wasn't a big deal, but they don't give you the work ahead of time. We got all the worksheets when we came back and the teacher even said don't rush it and take your time.
We actually lucked out. Supposed to miss a week of school, but the week we left was the big snowstorms. School was closed 2 days so he only missed 3 days. LOL!
Go and enjoy. Easier to do it when they're young.

Re: Missing 3-4 days of K for vacation
I think it depends on your child, honestly. We pulled my older son out of K for 5 days to go to Disney in January and he was totally fine. Teacher explained it as family/life experience and didn't send any work home because my son was very good with his academics. My younger son was very different and struggled to get into the school routine in the fall. He was only 4 when he started school and I know that if I pulled him in October for even a few days, the next few weeks would've been really difficult for him back at school. You know your kid best - the teachers should be fine with it but you're the best one to make the decision.

Re: Missing 3-4 days of K for vacation
I think if you ...
a) inform the teacher and make up any assignments when you return
b) buy and use an activity workbook (like pp recco'ed) to keep skills fresh
Enjoy your family time. Lives are so busy. Everyone needs time to reconnect with the stresses of work and school.

ITA. We pulled our DD in first grade for 6 days to go to Disney and she didn't miss a beat but school (so far) comes easy to her. If she was struggling I would likely be a little more hesiitant to pull her out for so long.
In general though, I don't have any problems with pulling kids out for vacation because I feel like in the grand scheme of life.........missing a few days here and there won't make or break anyone. Enjoy these family times, those memories are just as important as an education.

Re: Missing 3-4 days of K for vacation
As long as it is a rare thing, I absolutely say do it (I'm a teacher and mom btw). I would inform the teacher a week ahead of time and ask if there's anything they would want your child to complete (but don't expect work to be sent home ahead of time). In my eyes, a family vacation is something that can make memories that will last a lifetime so it is well worth it.

Missing 3-4 days of K for vacation
We are pulling DS out for a week to go to Disney in December and it didn't even phase me. I will be letting his teacher know before we go.
I think making family memories and enjoying life is important as well. It can't always be work, work, work.

Re: Missing 3-4 days of K for vacation
We did it up to 3rd grade (3 days), taking advantage of thanksgiving. I would do it again if I could. I brought hw with me (not from school but at the time he was dong kumon or books from B&N, plus normal books for DS to read).

I seem to be in the minority here... I don't think making up the work is what I would be concerned about. I am not crazy about sending the message to my kids that vacation trumps school.

Re: Missing 3-4 days of K for vacation
Absolutely! I feel the memories and experiences they have on family vacations definitely trump 3-4 days of school (I always get work for them to do while away). I took my 1st and 4th grader out for 4 days for Disney this year and don't regret a second of it!

Missing 3-4 days of K for vacation
I do it. A few days off for a family vacation DOES trump school imo, lol. It'll be like that when they grow up too. The vacations trump my husband's job! I know we get breaks and summer but the way the world works it sucks to go then bc of astronomical pricing and crowds- it can make a great vacation plan so stressful. Enjoy it!

Missing 3-4 days of K for vacation
My in-laws are pulling my sister in law out of school for 2 and half days next year and she will be a senior in high school. It is a surprise early graduation gift to go to Disney to see all the christmas stuff. If they are pulling her out without thinking twice I wouldn't stress about kindergarten. Enjoy the family time.

I would be interested in comparing the answers of parents who let their kids take the ELA and are ok with taking them out of school for vacations.

Re: Missing 3-4 days of K for vacation
I did it. My brother got married in Tx last fall. It was miss school (kindergarten) or miss the wedding. Obviously the wedding won. The teacher knew we were going. She didn't offer us work or homework and I didn't care. No big deal. It's kindergarten.

JMO, but I don't think the message is that a vacation necessarily trumps school. I think it's more that time together as a family and making lifelong memories is equally as important as an education. I think it's all part of creating a well rounded, balanced, memorable childhood for your kids.
As a former teacher, I put a great deal of emphasis on the importance of school however, I also feel strongly that my children are given the opportunity to see, experience, and do different things OUTSIDE of school because in the end those are the things they will remember and look back on. As long as your child is doing well in school the reality is, a few missed days here and there throughout their educational career won't do any harm. It's really just a blip on the radar.
It's a very personal choice and there is no right or wrong here but I just wanted to make the point that I don't think it's a competition between what's MORE important, school or vacations. I think BOTH are important (and beneficial) for different reasons.

To see if there is a common thought process between the two.
How fair is it to grade a teacher based on a test when parents can not send their kids to school to go on vacation? That is why we have plenty of breaks.
I understand the need on a rare occasion, but there are people that do it every year.
