I seem to be in the minority here... I don't think making up the work is what I would be concerned about. I am not crazy about sending the message to my kids that vacation trumps school.
JMO, but I don't think the message is that a vacation necessarily trumps school. I think it's more that time together as a family and making lifelong memories is equally as important as an education. I think it's all part of creating a well rounded, balanced, memorable childhood for your kids.
As a former teacher, I put a great deal of emphasis on the importance of school however, I also feel strongly that my children are given the opportunity to see, experience, and do different things OUTSIDE of school because in the end those are the things they will remember and look back on. As long as your child is doing well in school the reality is, a few missed days here and there throughout their educational career won't do any harm. It's really just a blip on the radar.
It's a very personal choice and there is no right or wrong here but I just wanted to make the point that I don't think it's a competition between what's MORE important, school or vacations. I think BOTH are important (and beneficial) for different reasons.
That is why there are only 180ish days of school and 365 days in the year go on vacation during breaks.

Some families can't afford it. Vacations during school breaks are MUCH more expensive and not to mention horribly crowded. Also some people CAN'T take vacations during school breaks. A few years back my husband wasn't able to take off because school breaks were his "busy season" and his vacation days wouldn't have been approved.
I try not to do it every year but some years we miss a few days of school for vacation. It's worth it to us and I don't think a thing of it.

Honestly, during school breaks the same vacation will cost you triple the amount and the crowds wherever you're going will be worse. No thanks. I'll be pulling my kids, vacationing during school breaks is a waste of money IMO.

I wish I could take a few days off to take my kids on vacation during school and save some money. Too bad the same arguments for missing school in favor of family vacations don't work for teachers!

Exactly! dH is a teacher so we just go on cheaper vacations or go on vacation less often and just deal with the crowds. Plenty of people go to Disney the end of aug when a lot of distrcts in the south go back. (But I'm sure the next excuse will be "its too hot ")

Yes, FL is intolerably hot as h-e-l-l in August.........no thanks.
Look, it's obvious you don't agree with pulling your kids out of school but not all of us feel the same and nobody is making "excuses" about pulling their kids, we just stated why we don't have a problem with it. To each his own.
