Missing Boy Scout- Opinions?
Ok, don't get me wrong, I'm very happy that they found him safe & sound, and it is amazing that he survived several days in the wilderness by himself. It is great, and I'm very glad he's home safe & sound now.
But after hearing that he purposely separated from the group because he didn't want to be there, and he wanted to walk to a road so he could hitch a ride with a stranger so he could leave, really got me worked up....
His poor troop leaders/chaperones that were there, while he was missing were probably nervous wrecks, feeling horrible that somehow they lost track of him. Then the other kids that were there were probably so freaked out & scared too. And then, all the searchers who spent days looking for him, and not only the manpower, but the $ that went into finding him. All because he didn't want to go on the trip in the first place, and decided he wanted to leave w/o telling anyone.
I understand, he's 12, we all make irrational decisions when we're younger, but still. And on the Today Show this morning, Meredith Viera asked if there was a special scout badge that he would earn for surviving for several days all alone in the wilderness. But it was his choice!!!
Thoughts?

While I don't think it was his intention to get lost and have to survive...I do think and know that kids do dumb things - whether they're 12 or 21....
I agree that it's not something that should be rewarded or honored b/c of all the manpower and money that went into finding him.
Let's just hope that going forward more kids won't do stupid things like this!

I know I felt weird that he purposely left the group. That's not what scouting teaches you and seriously couldn't believe when the scout leader was looking forward to his return to the troup!

Re: Missing Boy Scout- Opinions?
I actually heard on CNN that there is something emotionally wrong with him.
Which makes me even more mad that no one was watching closer

Agreed. I think I heard yesterday that he has ADHD or something similar. Again, someone should have been watching him more closely. But again, I don't think he should be rewarded for it.
And again, I am happy he is safe & sound, just upset about all the worry & stress he caused lots of people.

Re: Missing Boy Scout- Opinions?
DH was a boy scout for a long time & he was talking about it this morning. Of course we are happy for him & the family for him returning safely BUT...
(This is DHs opinion) DH thinks that him wanting to return home is a fishy story. At 12 years old he should have had enough training & equipment to find his way better & not get lost. Also, he should have known not to go off by himself without a buddy. Even at the BS camps they have a way of contacting your parents if something happens. If he was that desparate to go home, they could have found a way to contact his parents to come pick him up.

I was also a BS for many years.... trust me, not everyone who goes through BS knows what they are taught.... I'm surprised some of them could survive in their own house! Yes, they are all shown and taught how to survive, but not everything sticks.
Yes, maybe he should have been watch closer, but he probably was. It's impossible to keep an eye on a 12 year old who doesn't want to stay with the group. All you need is a "I have to go find a tree...." excuse, and he's gone.

I think it was and incredibly stupid thing to do, and there should be some type of repayment for all the time/effort and money spent searching for him.

If he does have ADHD then I can see it, but if he doesn't, I'd kick his azz so hard he wouldn't be able to walk away from me for weeks. Can you imagine the stress and everything he put on his parents, the people he was camping with, and even strangers that were looking for him?

Re: Missing Boy Scout- Opinions?
so when a kid separates from his or her mom at the mall do they get no compassion because they're the ones who went wandering off?
I am not following why this is being questioned. kids do dumb things, end of story.

It doesn't make the news though in the same caliber it is in this situation......
And if my kid wandered off in the mall, I would still kick his azz!
ETA: And no, there would be no compassion from me in either case. You wander off, you're lucky if you get found, that's compassion enough.

But did you read that he has something emotionally wrong with him so we are not dealing with someone who is totally in control

ADHD is a sensitive subject and I have no intention of belittling anyone's view of it........
BUT
when I was a kid there was no such thing, you just plain didn't pay attention well. And how far can we go making excuses for a child's behavior? I think a 12 year old should know that he shouldn't wander from a group far from his home.
Sorry, I don't have much compassion here....

I will never forget when my sisters and I were young and my mom took us to the beach this one time. my younger sister was probably about 8 or 9 yrs old at the time and she got lost. my mom was absolutely TERRIFIED and after looking for her for what seemed like forever, we finally found her at a lifeguard station crying her eyes out.
kids get lost, it happens all the time. she did not get a beating, and I really think that is way harsh. JMHO

I certainly believe that he should not get an award since he got lost by wandering off. No need to reinforce that kind of behavior.

There is a distinct difference between getting lost and INTENTIONALY wandering off because you want to go home. I didn't think I needed to clarify.
ETA: Sometimes harsh it was makes kids remember not to do it anymore.

I see it differently because he intentionally tried to leave the group and go home, and unfortunately he got lost/disoriented on the way. It was definitely a dumb thing, and I've done plenty of dumb things, it just stinks that all these people (family, searchers, chaperones, etc) were so worried for soooo long about him when he intentionally chose to go off on his own.

I normally like Meredith, but when I heard her say this, I wanted to reach through the TV and slap her. Did you see the reaction of the troop leader?
I was a GS and camped as a kid. I don't think this kid wandered off and got lost at all. I think either 1.) he never wanted to go, was coerced and then just decided to leave or 2.) something happened while he was at the camp to upset him and he couldn't handle it and decided to leave.
I am no expert, but I don't think ADHD alone would be the reason he left all the other kids and the leader and wandered off on his own. I think there is more to the story than what they are reporting.
