Mission accomplished! We got a couch!
we only went to 3 stores: Lazy Boy, The Place and Seigerman's and bought one from The Place.
they have such nice stuff there and a million different upholstery options. I let my DH pick everything and he did a great job! 
the only bad part - we have to wait 6 weeks for it

we got our couches from The Place also....great couches!
Just a word of advice....call up in a week or so to make sure your order was put through.....our's wasn't and we had to wait a lot longer than the 6 weeks they originally said

it was definitely painless. we could have picked 17 different couches there. they have a really nice selection!!
DH picked chocolate brown (or java) microfiber with beige chenille (or something similar to it) throw pillows. the couch has feet that are cherry color wood, which matches our coffee table and dining room furniture.
we have a loveseat that we're keeping since it's in mint condition and it's a very pale yellow (it's called butter). I think the contrast between the 2 will look so nice
