modeling chocolate question...where to store during our 2-day heat wave?
I made figures out of modeling chocolate today for a cake for Saturday. I hear that keeping them in the fridge can make them sticky, but it is supposed to be 90+ the next two days. I'm thinking they will melt if left out.
Do you think in this case it is safe to leave them in the fridge? How close to the event should I take the figures out to dry in air?

Definitely keep them in the fridge. They might sweat, but it's better than them melting. When is the party? Saturday? If it's later in the day, I'd take them out Saturday morning. If it's earlier, maybe Friday night, depending on how cool it is.

Actually, I had to take them out to finish painting them, and they were so wet from the fridge that I decided to leave them in open air to dry out. We have an AC unit that is on wheels on the floor and I moved it to the doorway of the kitchen. They dried out and they seem pretty firm. I'll just keep the AC on until the heat wave passes.
Question: so the cake will be a toolbox shape, covered in fondant, and I have 5 tools made out of modeling chocolate, and 14 other little things like nails, screws, washers, and nuts also made out of chocolate. I'm making a recess in the cake to hold the tools and want to sprinkle the nails and other things on the cake board around the toolbox
My question is: should I secure these all with royal icing, or transport them in a Tupperware and assemble on the cake when I get to the location? Any thoughts?

Yeah they sweat so much in the fridge! I hate working with chocolate in the summer! I did a groom's cake last summer and made the goals out of white chocolate. The AC in our car broke while we were stuck in traffic and the goals started melting! We had to race back home, repair the goals, and borrow our neighbor's brand new car. I think it had 50 miles on it! Still made it and the goals looked fantastic, but man was it a pain!
Do you think you'll have time to set up everything on the cake before the party starts? Also, are you going to be moving the cake around a lot? Personally, I'd try to secure them before I left. I always worry about things being forgotten or messed up in transit.

Well, I'm in the wedding, so I'm attending the rehearsal dinner. It is at 8, so I was thinking of bringing the cake to the restaurant at 3 or 4, so I don't have to deal with it during the party time. So I should have time to set it up, which is just putting the tools in the box and sprinkling the nails and other stuff around the cake.
I want to serve the tools as well as the cake, so I'm wondering if not securing them will make it easier for serving. And then I don't have to worry about the tools in transit bc they will be safe in a container with me instead of on the cake. But, my gut feeling is that I like to have everything secured and set before I leave. I don't know...

If you want to serve a tool with each slice of cake, I'd probably not secure them. I'd also probably wait until the last minute to spread them around the cake just in case they wheel it out or move it in some way. Bolts roll.
I'd also not put them all on the cake, KWIM? Maybe keep some in your tupperware to the side in case some roll and fall on the floor. At least then you'll have back ups to serve with the cake.

Actually, I think I have the perfect compromise. The big tools that go in the box will not be secured. I'll bring those in a tupperware and put them in when I get there. But the little tools I'm scattering around the cake and I will strategically place them where there is grease on the board from frosting. I will secure those with royal icing, and the restaurant can just pull them off to serve or pry off with a knife. That way, most are secure and in place, and the big ones that are the main ones served will be easy to remove.
