mommies living in splits, where do you put baby gates?

We have 2 small sets of stairs, one that goes up to the bedrooms and then one that goes down to the den. We got 4 baby gates to put at the top and bottom of each set. we got the kind that screw into the wall.

My friend told me today that I shouldn't put them on the stairs, but at the doorways, like the one to Sarah's room. the den doesn't really have a doorway, when you step off the bottom step you are in the room. same with the main level, you are just in the dining room or living room. Plus, what happens when she is learning to potty train? I'd still want a gate at the top of the stairs so she can't run past me out of the bathroom and down the stairs, right?

thanks.

This is a question for us too. We have an open staircase. There is no banister on the bottom 3 steps and it's a wide opening. I thinking of getting those ones at onestepbeyond or above that you can design your own amount of gating and putting it around the bottom of the stairs. We are also going to install on to her room too I think.

I would keep them where you have them now. But honestly by the time she is ready to potty train unless you have another little one in the house you will probably not need the gates anymore. At 2 1/2 years old my son goes up and down stairs like a champ. I sheltered him from stairs for a long time and notice that my nephew who wasn't as sheltered from stairs could do go up and down with no problem at 2 years old.

Thanks! I didn't want to install them and then have to move them b/c I didn't have them in the "right" place.

I think you def. have them in the right places!!! Besides you don't want to feel closed in or like a prisoner in your own home!! Thats how my sister went and wound up taking them all down as soon as he turned 2!! Chat Icon

we'll do them at the stairs too, but I think at the top and bottom might be much for us....we have 2 dogs.

We registered for the ones that you can step on to open...hands free!
