mommies who did CIO - question - UPDATED 2/10!!

OMG - he fell asleep after crying for 1/2 hour!

i didn't think we could do it but i am SOOOO happy we did.

now i need to know - if/when he wakes up in the middle of the night (or in 20 minutes Chat Icon) do i go in there? or just let him cry himself to sleep again?

i have a video monitor so i can check on him that way.

WWYD?

UPDATE 2/10:

he did it! he slept through the night!!

holy cow i am in shock.

he fell asleep at 8:15 and slept until 5:30!

he did wake up at about 2am, but he only cried a tiny bit, for maybe 15 seconds, and he went right back to sleep.

this morning was hard though - he woke to eat at 5:30 and i put him back down at 6am. he babbled and then cried - HARD - for 20 minutes before going back to sleep - then he was up babbling again for about 15 more minutes, and then fell asleep with no crying.

but of course since it was 6am i couldn't do anything to drown out the crying Chat Icon

i am hoping that the next few days we see some real improvement!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

thank you EVERYONE for your support and advice. Chat Icon

I don't go in, never did. If he sounds (or looks) truly panicked on the monitor, then go itChat Icon

Re: mommies who did CIO - question

When we did CIO we decided on a time limit that we wanted her to sleep (like if we put her in at 10pm we wanted her to sleep until at least 7-8am). If she woke up in the middle of the night we just let her CIO.

Re: mommies who did CIO - question

well what is your plan? Are you okay with feeding him once a night or do you want to get rid of all the wakings/feedings?

My husband and i went from ds waking 5 times a night to deciding that we were okay with feeding him once a night. So we set a goal of... okay if he gets up between 1-3am, we'll feed him. Any other times, we let him cry.

Same here! Unless he was truly freaking out I wouldn't go in - it only made him worse!

That's great for the first night BTW! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

i know he doesn't need to eat until 5:30, 6 am - he has gone 10-11 hours without eating since he was 3 months old.

thanks everyone!! Chat Icon

So then yes i would not go in no matter what!!!

Word of advice... when he wakes and cries... do not just lie in bed listening the whole time. Chat Icon It will drive you insane. Go do some laundry, cleaning, go on the computer, pay some bills, watch tv or anything you can to distract yourself. Chat Icon

Re: mommies who did CIO - question

you can do it!!!! it will be all worth it when it's over. DS cried for over 2 hours the first night but we let him do it. i never picked him up--i just let him know i was there and i think that was a mistake. i shouldn't have gone in at all. about 2 days later i stopped going in altogether and within a few days he was sleeping through the night.

just know that he won't have any ill effects--in fact he'll feel better once he starts sleeping through the night. i think it's harder on parents than the kids.

good luck--FM me if you need to talkChat Icon

Re: mommies who did CIO - question

The first night my rule was after a few minutes I'd go in, nurse, back in crib.

Turns out he made it something like 9 hours. So I let him "start the day" at like 6:30.

Since that night I know he is capable of sleeping 9 hours. I will not go in before then. And typically he will sleep until 7ish now...with possibly waking up in the middle of the night once and we don't go in.

I want to add you are doing a great job!!! Consistency is key!! Chat Icon

Re: mommies who did CIO - question

Did he sleep through the night?

He rarely woke up in the middle of the night. If he did I'd wait to see what kind of cry it was and only went in if it was a "real" cry.

Re: mommies who did CIO - question

We don't go in his room in the middle of the night if he cries. Only if his cry seems different (or he's sick) do we go in.

Congrats on having a successful night! It will hopefully keep getting better! Chat Icon Chat Icon
