Mommies with Pools or who took their DC in pools around 3 months
We are going to Florida to DH's family reunion in July. DS will be 3 months old. I am not planning on having him in the sun very much, but the house we are staying at has a nice pool.
So, here are my questions. Can DS go in the pool? If I take him in the shallow end, should I just hold him or get one of those floats? The house has them, my neice was 8 months last summer and she used them.
What else do I need to know?

Yes, he can go in the pool. I would probably hold him so he doesnt fall over. A float should be ok too if he can hold is head up. You shouldn't put sun block on them but in FL in a reflective pool I would probably put a very little on the face to avoid burn. I would also try to find something with a sun shade. Have fun!

Re: Mommies with Pools or who took their DC in pools around 3 months
I had DD in the pool at 3 months with a big hat and sunglasses. She loved it. We only stayed in a few minutes at a time since there was no shade. We just held her- no floats- they have too little neck control.
You probably could use a little sunscreen. I read in Parenting Magazine that the American Academy of Pedatrics oks the use in infants under 6 months but very sparingly, avoiding their hands and eyes.

My doctor said sunblock is perfectly fine....you DO NOT want them getting sunburned...We took Mikayla in the poo; yesterday and put sunblock and a hat on her...she loved it...she is 2 1/2 months old

Used sparingly it's fine. Babies dont sweat like we do. "Babies have a mildly impaired mechanism to keep cool by sweating. In addition, they have a greater risk of becoming dehydrated due to heat. Sunscreen can somewhat impair effective cooling by perspiration, so placing it on an infant could be detrimental" That is why I said you shouldn't use it.

My doctor also said not to use any at all and to keep her out of the sun between 10 and 3.

My ped said at any age really, except to be careful if it's a public pool because of coxsackie.

My DS will be 5 months on Friday and he is very fair. Our Ped. gave us samples of sunblock to use. I plan on taking him into my parents pool any day now. I'll probably start off with sunblock, hat, sunglasses, and holding him. We will slowly move onto floats.

Re: Mommies with Pools or who took their DC in pools around 3 months
DS was about 1 1/2 to 2 months old when we put him in a pool. It was one of those baby pools. My nephew was 10 months at the time so they would have him in there and my brother always wanted me to put Matthew in it. The water was warm water from the faucet and I sat him in it holding him up of course. I can't wait to put him in the pool this summer. He is going to love it, at least he should love it. He loves bathtime!
Here is a pic of DS in the pool last summer...

Re: Mommies with Pools or who took their DC in pools around 3 months
Thanks ladies
I asked my ped about sunscreen already b/c DS takes after DH (irish fair skinned) and not me (an italian with dark skin) and he said "off the record" that we could use Water Babies since it was better to use the sunscreen then to have him burn. I got the Water Babies spray lotion at Target last week.
I have this bathing suit with a matching wide brimmed hat (that I can't fing on BRU right now) what do I put on his torso? A t shirt? And do they make swim diapers that little?

the smallest swim diapers they have start at 16 lbs...MIkayla is only around 13 but they worked fine, a little big but not too bad

They also make these one piece suits that look like wetsuits and it covers them up. My niece has one and I am looking for one for DD.
