Mommy Teachers...Question for you..
I posted this under the Teacher section, but I'm figuring that it doesn't get much traffic this time of year.
I have a degree in Elem Ed. I never had a permanent position- just subbing and a leave replacement.
I left teaching before I got a full time job and went into another field all together.
My big question is- how do I renew my certification??? I remember dealing with NYS was a nightmare....I think that my cert. expired about 5 years ago. Do I need to re-take the tests to get re-certified?? Does anyone know where I can find this info??
Also, are you happy teaching? What and where do you teach??
I know it is hard to get a public school position, is it any easier to get a position in a private school???
Thanks a lot for any info..

You will probably have to set up a TEACH online account with state ed. This is alink to the site. ALso maybe check out BOCES and they can help you with certification questions/concerns. Good luck.

Re: Mommy Teachers...Question for you..
I left NY to teach in NJ a few years ago and let my certification expire. Can't help you with that part.
I teach high school history & really enjoy it. I went back after six months maternity leave & thought I would be miserable & longing to be home with DD. Honestly, it wasn't so bad! My job is stressful at times & very very time consuming when I'm at home. DD & I get home at four but I have tons & tons of essay & HW grading to do, lesson plans, etc. (I teach AP level). But, DD goes to bed around 7 & I work the rest of the night on school work & stuff around the house. I have no life during the school year & I'm always exhausted. But... I enjoy being in the classroom. I'm at my best when I'm teaching teenagers. It makes me happy. So even though I'm insanely busy, it's the right choice for me.
Many other teachers do not put in the amount of hours I do, and therefore have a lot more free time. I'm trying to get to that point after 8 years of teaching. I'm also not volunteering as much around school & supervising fewer activities.
Plus, the summer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't beat it!
As far as jobs go, yes, it is very competitive. But you never know until you try! You could be the perfect fit for a school. Good luck!

I stopped teaching and let my certificate expire. I don't think you have to retake all the tests...but I think that you need to put a certain amount of hours in every year with workshops. I wish I would have gotten my perm. certificate...I would have been set for life...

Re: Mommy Teachers...Question for you..
Thanks for all of the advice.. I went to the website and registered- but I can't find any info on what to do if it is expired. I have gotten an extension once before, however that one expired on 2001.
Can I extend again, or do I have to retake LAST/ATSW???
