Moms of 2-3 year old girls
Does your DD let you near her hair? DD refuses to let me near her with a brush half the time, and her hair is ALL over the place. I have the detanlging spray, I am extremely gentle, but she freaks out.
I see all these little girls with pigtails and wish I could get hers up
Any advice?

Re: Moms of 2-3 year old girls
DD (3) had a HUGE fear of vacuum cleaners and hair dryers. I could never even turn them on in front of her. She just at 3 years and 3 months lets me put it on low for a few minutes to dry her hair.
I bribed her with cookies!

Re: Moms of 2-3 year old girls
I get to comb it, that's about it. A barrett MIGHT last half a day and then she'll pull it out.
She refuses to let me put it in pigtails
Most of the time she looks like a little raggamuffin and I can't stand it!!!

Re: Moms of 2-3 year old girls
I try putting DD in front of the TV, sing songs - anything to try and distract her. I also use the detangler and even when she doesn't have knots she cries 80% of the time. If I do get to put in a ponytail she usually pulls it out within a few hours. As long as I can get a brush through her hair once a day I'm usually happy.
I am so thankful the baby is bald right now

I put DD in her highchair with Dora on and gold fish. That is the only why I can get near her to do her hair.

Re: Moms of 2-3 year old girls
She usually lets me brush it and I quickly put in a rubberband, but then when I pull out a bow she protests. But other days she asks for it. I depends on her mood.

I get to brush it once a day, and I fight to put in a headband or a little ponytail. I wish I could do more with her hair but she won't let me.
I've never blow-dried her hair....except when I am drying my own and she wants it blown on her face from far, far away!!

She actually lets me do this. Sometimes only for a few minutes but I love when she lets me do it for awhile and I can make it look pretty! It's part of her bath time routine. Daddy bathes her and then I put her jammies on and then she sits on the bathroom counter for me to dry her hair.
If she's a pill about her hair this summer I was actually thinking about cutting it into a cute bob.

Same here! And usually an hour after I get a barrett in she rips it out from her hair and i find the barett and a clump of her hair still in the barrett on the floor.

Re: Moms of 2-3 year old girls
Erin used to be very annoyed whenever I touched her hair. I learned to brush her hair, put in a ponytail or barette when she was distracted.. either by watching tv, playing with a toy, even eating. She eventually got used to it and no longer gives me a hard time.

I do my hair first and say to her that mommy is going to do her hair.., She automatically wants me to do hers as well.. It works for us

Re: Moms of 2-3 year old girls
DD has TONS of hair and will tolerate clips in it every day (though she does take them out occasionally, but I can always put them back in)...the clips just keep the hair out of her face. She'll tolerate pigtails or a ponytail most of the time BUT she will not wear them in the carseat, so I have to wait until we get to our destination to do them, which is frustrating b/c they look wacky b/c I'm doing them on the fly at that point

I guess I am the one you hate...dd has her trademark ponytails, she wears them everyday! I have no idea why but she would sit forever and let me do them!

Re: Moms of 2-3 year old girls
DD yells "oW!!! that hurts!!" every time I am near her hair. I try to do it gently, but sometimes I hit a snag and she freaks out. I usually do it when she is sitting at the table eating...it is NOT easy. I would love tips too.

Re: Moms of 2-3 year old girls
Well, she has no problem with the hair dryer and I've started using conditioner on her hair in the shower so that when I try to brush it the next morning, the detangler spray works more easily. I've decided that, while there are some battles not worth fighting, hair being brushed is not a battle I am willing to lose. Anything that is part of basic grooming, she has no choice. So, she gives me a hard time, but I don't care. She gets over it in a matter of minutes, but we worked at it to get it that way. I also cut her hair above her shoulders for this reason. So, whatever, she can hate me for it, but I'm brushing her hair whether she likes it or not.

Re: Moms of 2-3 year old girls
DD has had a lot of hair since birth so she is used to me going at it with a brush and clips, bows, etc.
Now that she is over 2, I'll do her hair while she is eating breakfast. If she protests, I'll do it while she is watching Dora and threaten to turn it off if she doesn't let me finish. It buys me about 10 minute of hair time.

My dd is terrified of noisy things, so no dryer. But she loves to have"pretties" in her hair so she will sit for that.

Re: Moms of 2-3 year old girls
Nope. starts screaming if she even sees a brush. and if i manage to get a barrette in, she'll pull it out 5 minutes later. keep in mind, she has curly/frizzy hair. so most days, she looks like a ragamuffin.
on a side note, i was y my mom the other day, looking at baby pictures of myself- in eveyr pictures, I looked like a abandonded child, the hair was so messy. I asked my mom- jokingly- if she ever brushed my hair, and she said to me- "have you seen your child lately?" . oh well, i survived. and so did my mom. and so will my daughter, although i may jsut cut it short at this point - its REALLY bad.

Re: Moms of 2-3 year old girls
DD has had hair since she was born and never lost it..I used to put tiny little bows at the top..She just turned 3 the other day and she lets me do her hair everyday..She will yell ouch if I'm tugging and she has knots..I usually bathe her every morning..use conditioner..I find that it works better then detangler..I do all different styles and she lets me..She is pretty patient. Sometimes..if she doesn't want me to do anything I may put in a quick bow to one side...or a quick pony up. I have to say I am very lucky but I think it's just because she is so used to it. I'm a nut about her hair most of the time.

Re: Moms of 2-3 year old girls
I never really had to do much with it until recently because we kept it in a bob with bangs. She protested at first but I always made a big deal about how cute she is when it's all done. Now, she sits still for me and demands to look in the mirror afterward. Maybe try giving her a mirror to hold so she can see what's going on?

Re: Moms of 2-3 year old girls
DD didn't mind us combing her hair, but she hated anything in it. Barrettes, pony tail clips, scrunchies, etc. Now (she's 3.5) she actually likes them, and will come to us with one and ask us to put them in her hair.
